Commentary: Ignore Ohio State football's Twitter noise, Notre Dame deserved BCS title bid

Notre Dame players kneel down prior to the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 7 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Alabama won, 42-14.

Some Ohio State football players are delusional, and their Twitter accounts prove it.

As Alabama depantsed and flogged Notre Dame in front of 26.4 million people watching and snickering from home, Buckeye football players raced to their laptops, iPhones or — gasp — perhaps even their athletic department-issued iPads and took to the interwebs to let the world know how they deserved a spot in the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 7.

According to them, the Fighting Irish, which, like OSU, finished the season undefeated, were unfit of the chance to win their first national title since 1988.

Never mind the Crimson Tide — which eventually proved their almost-frightening dominion over the rest of the college football world — couldn’t do what Notre Dame and the Buckeyes did and emerge from the regular season unblemished.

Still, according to some OSU players, Notre Dame backed itself into the sport’s biggest stage despite having nearly an identical, if not better season as coach Urban Meyer’s squad.

The nerve!

It’s not only an absolutely absurd notion but also an exceptionally illogical and ignorant one.

Don’t tell that to some of the most high-profile Buckeyes, though.

Heck, junior running back and Abrams tank Carlos Hyde tweeted he wasn’t going to bother watching the game. He had better things to do, apparently.

From his account, @king_hyde34, he said: “I’d rather play Call of Duty than watch this game tonight. King of COD!”

Good for you, Carlos. Good for you.

Comparatively, Hyde’s comments are pretty docile.

His teammate, junior receiver Corey “Philly” Brown, openly pined for an Alabama victory via his account, @phillybrown10: “Whelp since we not playing in game tonight like we should be... #rolltide lol.”

If you can get past the fact the tweet is missing at least two words, take a gander at the phrase “like we should be.” Talk about awkward, considering NCAA sanctions banned OSU from the postseason. There is no “should be.” But Brown continues to assert the antithesis of that, anyway:

“@phillybrown10: Headed to Miami to tell Brian Kelly to throw in the towel before it gets ridiculos... Smh clearly one team shouldn’t be there #overrated”

Yet, by that logic, wouldn’t an OSU team that notched only two wins against teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25 poll (No. 24 Michigan and No. 25 Nebraska) be overrated, too? At least Notre Dame beat eventual-Rose Bowl champion No. 7 Stanford.

Who did the Buckeyes beat that Notre Dame didn’t? A Penn State team sanctioned back to the stone age? An at-best average Wisconsin squad?

Here’s another fine gem from Brown after the Tide went up, 21-0, against the Irish with 14:56 in the second quarter:

“@phillybrown10: So much for that great front 7... ND just got 21edddddddddddddddddddd.”

While the 20 D’s really drive the point home, I’m not so certain that “21edddddddddddddddddddd” is a verb, let alone a word.

That’s a bunch of malarkey, Philly.

And so are most arguments that some how, some way, OSU was more deserving of a national championship invite than Notre Dame or deserved an AP national title.

Can you understand OSU’s frustration? Of course, especially considering the penalties that keep them out of the postseason were hardly of their own doing. Was Notre Dame overrated? Maybe — but who’s to say the Buckeyes would’ve fared better against coach Nick Saban’s machine that is Alabama football?

In reality, the struggle of “which team is more deserving” is little more than settling which crew earned the right to be publicly defiled and shamed at the hands of the Crimson Tide.

Like the Irish, OSU is a long, long way from that kind of dominance.

OSU would have been routed just as bad if not more so than ND and thats the truth...Indiana put up 49 on OSU. The teams defense was average at best on the year...if anything the national championship game just showed how far and above Alabama is than anyone else in college football. Take a look at who ND beat and who OSU beat. ND had the better quality schedule, then simply look at the final scores and that tells you all you need to know.

"Morons like this are why most of the country hates our fans"

Yeah, because bloviating posters complaining about OSU fans are so much better. The article is just about as weak as your attempt to distinguish yourself by diminishing those "other" OSU fans.

Seriously, this is an article about how Alabama deserved their "proved their almost frightening dominion over the rest of the college football world"? How so? They were only tested twice and barely squeaked by. LSU: 21-17 in a desperate comeback, Georgia would have won if time hadn't run out. All the other teams (Ol' Miss 6-6, Arkansas 4-8, Auburn 3-9, Michigan 8-5, Texas A&M what's that? Bama LOST, W. Kentucky 7-5, Fla. Atlantic 3-9, W. Carolina 1-10. Where's the strength in THAT schedule? Really. No more difficult that the Buckeyes, actually easier. No, Bama is neither dominant nor a powerhouse... and yes....they only got into the championship game 'cause the BUCKEYES COULDN'T GO. And of course the Buckeyes would have beaten them. Alabama wouldn't have known what hit 'em. The score may have been closer, but, it would have been a knock-out punch from the Ohio State Buckeyes. 12 and 0 don't forget. ....the defense rests.

What an immature and pointless article.

Where exactly did any OSU players say OSU should be there instead of ND?

Carlos Hyde's comment said he wasn't going to watch the game. Period.

Philly Brown said before the game that since OSU can't be there like "we should be" he is rooting for Alabama. Common sense would conclude that he is talking about 1) should be if not for NCAA sanctions and 2) instead of Alabama who is the 1-loss team, who was in fact #2 in the BCS ranking.

Later he notes that ND was overrated - which based on thier performance, was an opinion widely shared.

This whole article is manufactured outrage, and a poor job of it. When you add it the grammer correction on twitter, the author shows how desperate he is to piece together a story where none exists.

I don't know if this aspiring sportswriter is just unimaginative, or if he is a ND fan trying to find a place to channel his shame and frustration - but in either event this is just sad.

" You know nothing about how football works and less about how Twitter works."
" Closet ND fan? What else are you hiding in the closet Patrick? LOL what an idiot..... "
" That is one of the worst articles I have ever read... Not only is it not news, it's a complete waste of time to read. The fact that you're grandstanding about teenagers and young men on what they are writting on twitter is ridiculous. This is not journalism....this is pathetic. "
" F@cking worst article I've ever read. I sure hope they aren't paying you for this sh!t! "

Morons like this are why most of the country hates our fans. They are so completely intellectually impotent and irrationally blinded by their love for the football team that they turn all caveman when someone says their precious Buckeyes aren't 100% perfect. I don't know why the Lantern even bothers with these articles anymore because these idiots just taint them with their brain-dead posts in the comments sections.

What an odd article. To the author, what was the point? And I mean what was your real point in writing this?

Actually they won the last 3 match ups. Notre Dame deserved to be there just as much as anyone else. OSU wouldn't of had a chance against Bama. Now the match up should have been ND vs OSU, but do to sanctions it didn't happen. Now who would win that game who knows that's why we play the game. Personally I don't think the OSU team could of beaten ND this year. I agree I wish they could get these 2 teams scheduled soon. Yes I am an Irish fan.

If Ohio State had been eligible they probably would have ended up losing to Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Once Alabama beat Georgia the SEC voters would have banded together to make sure one of their own was in the championship game anyway.

I can see the hype now... ND vs Ohio State, an epic battle over who would be the 7th best team in the SEC.

Da Buckeye FB players can get on social media and talk all the crap they want (against ND) BUT TP is why ESPN stopped saying "They can't wn big games!!" Osu was a joke against SEC teams and in college FB period! Oh I'm sure Nick Sabin is praying Urban's team get to the title game next year (talk about RATINGS)!!! Now I need to go Tebow for my Ravens...NOW THAT WAS A GREAT GAME (against Broncos)!
