Commentary: Jim Tressel has done more harm than good to Ohio State football

On the popular Adam Carolla Podcast, the hosts are known for playing a game titled "More harm than good," in which they come up with people, ideas or concepts that have caused more damage than benefits for society.

But since Carolla's expertise often falls outside the world of sports, allow me to make the case for something that should join bathroom attendants and open seating on airplanes in being the root of more harm than good: the Jim Tressel era at Ohio State.

Before I make my case, however, let's toss out a few cases for Tressel: his religion and his charity work. Religion has nothing to do with football (am I the only one who's wondered what Tim Tebow's reputation would be if he was an atheist?) and every college coach, including Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari (who's had two Final Fours vacated) does charity work.

As for what actually matters when evaluating a football coach, it'd be hard to do enough damage to make a national title, seven Big Ten titles and eight BCS bowl game appearances not worth it, but with the recent extended suspensions of DeVier Posey and Dan "Boom" Herron, I have no choice but to conclude that Tressel did just that.

So, just how does one make a near decade of dominance at one of college football's most high profile programs a moot point? It all started with Tattoo-gate, where Tressel was tipped off to the wrongdoings of Terrelle Pryor and Posey, but failed to report it, and instead chose to play athletes who should have been ruled ineligible for the duration of the 2010 season.

His decision (or indecision) eventually led to him being forced out as OSU's head coach, but not before he could further damage the program.

After Pryor, Posey and four other teammates were suspended for the start of the 2011 season, Tressel made them promise that they would return for their senior seasons before letting them play in the Sugar Bowl. You know, because there's no better way to punish kids who claim they only sold stuff because they were in dire need of the money than by preventing them from making a living for one more whole year?

Asking the already troubled players to return to school turned out to be just as problematic as you'd think. Posey and Herron continued to accept money that they didn't earn through March 2011, four months after they had already been punished for Tattoo-gate.

The NCAA allegedly discovered this because Pryor, who thanks to his promise to Tressel missed the NFL draft deadline, was doing his best to get ruled ineligible by the NCAA in hopes of being taken in the NFL's supplemental draft.

Had Pryor, Posey and Herron all declared for the draft following Tattoo-gate, Tressel would likely still be out of a college coaching job and the Buckeyes would be just as much of a mess on the field as they are now. But thanks to Tressel demanding players to return to a school that they didn't want to be at, OSU is likely facing charges of a lack of institutional control, as in less than a year, 10 players have been suspended for receiving improper benefits.

And if you want to blame the players for their transgressions, go ahead; I'm right there with you. Just remember who recruited these troublemakers to OSU in the first place.

People like to pretend that Tressel transformed OSU into the national power that it is, when in reality, he's leaving the football program in worse shape than it was in before he got here, and that's a clear sign of having done more harm than good.

Just another nerd sportswriter that's writing a provocative article with a bunch of overblown nonsense. Some players sold there OWN jerseys for $50.00 ...same ones NCAA and OSU sells for $200 and Tressel didn't turn them in to the NCAA...Did Tressel graduate most of his players? Did they cheat in class? NO! Gotta go to the SEC(special ed conference) for that. Give me a break....NCAA is the real joke here.

I've been an OSU fan for 40 yrs. Yes, Tress did a lot of honorable charity work and won a lot of games ... but that does not excuse his Deliberate Cheating. Tress knew what he was doing. It is unforgiveable for a Head Coach to put players out on the field that he KNOWS were not eligible to play. That is Flagrant Cheating and it is disgraceful. It was not a one-time "mistake"; he repeated this deliberate cheating for 12 straight games. That is Wrong and everybody knows it.

He lost the priviledge to remain as Head Coach. No amount of charity work can give anybody a free pass on cheating throughout an entire season of 12 games.

Ben Axelrod = A Hole (whoever he thinks he is) I guess if you're a nobody , never accomplished anything and probably never will, you can always degenerate someone else instead of making something of yourself.

BS. Tressel is Buckeye football as far as I'm concerned. I'll even go so far as to say that he was better for OSU than Woody. Woody hit players, while Tressel sacrificed himself to protect them. Go away, and keep your hateful tripe out of the Lantern.

Oh, for the love of God and everything holy! This "scandal" will blow over just like every other scandal in the history of humanity. Villanize Jim Tressel or the players or whoever else you choose but just remember that absolutely no one is perfect, we all screw up (sometimes enormously), and judgment is not ours to pass. Throw stones if you must, but take care to consider the structure of your own house first. Karma is likely to bite you in the rear end on its way out the glass door otherwise. GO BUCKS and GOOD LUCK COACH! Hope to see you back on the field in your sweatervest soon.

What's funny about all of this is, when the Bucks were winning we cheered, when they lost it hurt us. In his tenure, he restored Buckeye Pride which was priceless. We hadn't seen success like this since Woody was on the sidelines. Yes we beat Michigan, but going to Ann Arbor was a different story, we won there. They beat one of the greatest college football teams of all time in the 2002 Miami Hurricanes. Produced productive NFL players year after year, and trained many staff members to be great coaches. We go 4-3 with a young football team and it's all Tressels fault. Ask Mack Brown and the mighty Texas Longhorns who runs a clean program what happens to a young team. They didn't even reach a bowl game last year, and they're a national powerhouse. The program will be just fine. Look how many Nba, Nfl, and MLb players get into trouble and they get paid millions of dollars.

let's face it tressel was the fall guy not the culprit in this mess. yes he should have reported it. but can one mistake in judgement be enough to erase all the good he did for hundreds of student athletes over a decade, or the university. so Ohio state was embarrassed. they should be. lack of institutional control. without a doubt. and yes i am an osu alumni, not a michigan fan. So if you have a lack of institutional controls then you don't fire or force out the coach. you hold the people in charge of the institution and the institutions institutions like the athletic department responsible - like gordon gee who runs the institution and athletic director gene smith who runs the institutions within the institution itself. They are the two who lost institutional control not jim tressel. good luck coach hope you someday win a super bowl.

Hey wiser, two years after Cooper left, OSU won a national title. Will the Buckeyes win a title two years after Tress left? Nope, cause they'll be banned from a bowl game

Clearly anyone who thinks the program is worse off than it was before JT got here isn't old enough to remember the 1999 and 2000 seasons. These are words of someone who thinks it is a given to beat M*ch*gan every year and to have a top ranked football and basketball team year in and year out. These are the venomous words of a person who does not yet comprehend that football players are people, too (despite being more physically fit and large than many of us mere mortals) who may have actually benefited from being coached by a man who was intricately involved in their lives and developing them into better men.
I suppose you have succeeded in gaining readers with this commentary. You have not, however, thought this one through. Are there issues? Yes. Worse off than before? Not a chance.

the writer is an idiot, fanning flames for a fire his followers and fond worshipers crave.

OSU hating is your pastime. You see nothing positive when it comes to OSU. Hence, your hate will be displayed ahead of anything positive.

You deserve yourselves.

Bring Tressel Back!

Bring Tressel back. There was no crime, the NCAA is criminal in their witchhunt that is slanted against OSU. Enough is enough. Why are they taking so long to render a final ruling? They dealt with Auburn, CAM Newton, and that program within a few weeks - and let them off of the hook, even though it was clear that the incredible amount of $ 150,000 was being tossed around ! Miami players sat one week. Posey almost the whole season!! Really ??? Ask Tressel to come back and let him fix the program and work through the punsishment.

I find it unfortunate that the author of this article will almost certainly not read this comment. There is no conceivable way Mr. Axelrod will accomplish anything in his entire life that will compare with what Mr. Tressel has accomplished. Jim Tressel is a great man. It is hard for me to believe that nobody seems to pay attention to the fact that all these kids are graduating. Isn't THAT what it's really all about? It is time to bond together as Buckeyes not crap on each other.

I was at OSU when Woody Hayes was coach. He used to hit players, but he was a great coach. OSU even named a street after him, even after they fired him! Tressel was a great coach for OSU. Not only the championships but let's not forget beating Michigan time and again. Isn't it funny that Ben Axlerod, in his commentary FORGOT that he beat Michigan. Ben, i guess you haven't been around enough to understand. Beating Michigan IS ALL THAT MATTERS! Tressel took the fall for everyone (unless something else comes out that changes what we already know). He protected his kids. Yes, I call them kids, because I'm old enough to be able to say that. Also remember, he, at the end "resigned." He was not fired as Woody was. His "kids" caused the problem, not him. He was caught between a rock and a hard place. Once the dust settles, I feel he will be back coaching (that's what he does)....AT OSU. Yes, I said it, and we'll take him back with opened arms

First, it always amazes me how non-buckeyes troll The Lantern. Secondly, it will probably take a decade before all of what happened this past year with the Buckeye football team to surface. Let me just pose this to all who are reading these comments--Jim Tressel handled similar problems with Clarett and Smith. He suspended both of them on his own..not waiting for NCAA to step in. What is different about this incident? The Athletic Director. Do you really believe that Jim Tressel kept what was going on with these five individuals from his boss? I don't think he rolls that way, I think he uses the chain of command, and his past disciplinary actions against former players proves that. This Buckeye team has lost its leader and consequently lost its spirit. I am perfectly supportive of OSU getting punished by the NCAA, although I believe it was a little excessive, it is common to use an exemplary program to set an example. I support Coach Tressel until all the facts have been revealed, and that may take years. I hope everyone who has jumped on the hate wagon will eat a lot of crow in their future. I am a proud graduate of The Ohio State University, and this bump in the road will not make me waiver my loyalty or support of my university.

Disclaimer: M fan. Not unmindful of the recent past (Fab Five; "Stretch-gate").

The way forward will be difficult as long as there are any admins still clinging to the institutional culture of the past; clearing the decks is the only way to build a strong long-term program environment.

This isn't easy to do; this article is the sort of thing that needs to be said as long as people are clinging to a discredited past rather than building the future. Best of luck; this isn't the only fanbase that has had to endure a down period (as I'm sure you know).
