OSU head coach Urban Meyer addresses the media during a National Signing Day press conference Wednesday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

With 24 of the nation’s most sought-after high school football recruits heading to Columbus in the fall to join what was already one of the most promising teams in the nation heading into the 2013 season, I’ll go ahead and say what everyone else is thinking.

I don’t miss Jim Tressel. Not even a little bit.

The events that unfolded on Wednesday’s National Signing Day provided all the evidence I needed to solidify coach Urban Meyer as the most feared and ruthless recruiting powerhouse in all of college sports, nailing down his second consecutive top-five recruiting class at OSU. Many would argue that this year’s class, which finished No. 1 in Scout.com’s rankings and No. 2 in Rivals.com’s rankigns, is the best in the nation.

And he’s just getting warmed up.

Not to say that Tressel couldn’t do his fair share of recruiting, or that he failed to deliver national championship-caliber teams, but I would say that from the day Meyer walked through the door of Tressel’s old office, football recruiting at OSU soared to new heights.

Here’s the statistic from Wednesday that catches my attention the most: Meyer’s 2013 class includes 13 players from states outside Ohio. Most of these players are from states residing in the southeastern region of the country — territory that the SEC traditionally sweeps with dominating fashion.

I look at these players, such as five-star safety recruit Vonn Bell from Rossville, Ga., who chose OSU over Tennessee and Alabama, and what I see is this: a pattern of highly touted players choosing to pack their bags and follow Meyer to Columbus rather than punch their ticket to an SEC school and join forces with without a doubt the most impressive conference in college football for the past decade.

Meyer’s healthy ties to recruiting areas in SEC territory gives him a clear advantage that Tressel never had and gives the Buckeyes new talent that Tressel could have never persuaded to make the trip north.

Ultimately, it would appear that playing for Meyer is a much more attractive sell to players from all parts of the country, not just Ohio recruits who have grown up as Buckeye fans.

When Tressel held the reigns, big-name recruits from outside Ohio were few and far between. With Meyer, it’s becoming business as usual.

I don’t know about you, but that’s something I can get used to.

In the only head to head matchup, Meyer owned in the 2007 championship game. Tressel's offense had no imagination and was easily stopped. Who could forget the telegraphed fourth down play where they gave the ball to Wells who was 7 yards deep in the backfield. Meyer's offensive was dynamic and creative and unstoppable.

As for recruiting, I agreed with Tressel that to keep Ohio's best players would starve adjacent teams like Michigan. But, if you obsessed, as he did, over Ohio's players, you were walling yourself off from dozens of players better than those in Ohio. Once in awhile, Tressel got a big out of state recruit, but most of them he didn't! Go to rivals or scouts and check his classes out. Meyer has probably gotten as many four and five star southern players in two years than Tressel did in a decade! Also, Meyer isn't just interested, as was Tressel, in weakening Michigan and winning the big ten by getting all of the best players from Ohio, he's interested in weakening teams from the south too and winning a national championship! That's the difference.

Anybody who thinks Jim Tressel is better than Urban Meyer is dumb. Just look at 2007 National Title Game. And yeah Tressel was 9-1 vs Michigan but a monkey can coach Ohio State over Michigan. Cooper is below a mentality of a monkey.

Urban Meyer has already solidified his place in Buckeye lore by bringing us an undefeated season immediately following one of the most disappointing seasons in the modern era... BUT, it is way too early to begin tossing the legacy Jim Tressel built for this program: a decade of Big Ten dominance, an unprecedented ownership of That School Up North, THREE appearances in a National Title contest, and as others have pointed out, dozens of out-of-state superstars.

Focusing on the number of recruits bagged from out of state complete ignores the fact that Ohio is one of the three hottest states in the nation for football talent - considering that the rosters of the other 11 B1G teams included, on average, 11.5% of their players from the state of Ohio last season, it's little wonder that Tressel built a fence around the state first.

Everything Tress did was with class & dignity - even standing tall for his kids to the very end. Everyone has opinions & unfortunately they have a right to voice them - no matter how little thought was mustered together in order to verbalize them. THE Ohio State University is a better place because of Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer will continue those high standards. Those of you who find it necessary to become critical of 18-22 year old kids for lapse's in judgments really need to take up knitting of some other useful activity

Coach Tressel brought us back to an era of football respectability. Lets wait a few years before we annoit Mr. Meyer as the second coming of the football mesiah. What he is doing is great for O State but he has a long way to go to live up to what Mr. T accomplished for us.
GO BUCKS - someone get Hoke a twinkie

I'm happy to see that we are picking up the most talented players out of state, just so long as our talented players in the state of Ohio are looked at and recruited first. There's nothing worse than seeing Ohio State play a team whose star player is from Ohio - and it happens a lot. I'm a little bit concerned about your excitement that Meyer can pluck the players from the South, when we have such a talented pool in-state and in other midwestern states. That's where the pride should come in. I'm so happy that Urban Meyer came to Ohio State. He's been a lifeline to our football program. But, celebrate him without bashing Tressel. For those of us who watched every single game that Tressel coached - he will always be loved and missed.

Until Meyer goes 9-1 vs Michigan, you would be a fool to compare anyone to Coach Tressel

Cut him a break, he's probably 18, and was only 8 when we won a National Championship. Forgive him for he simply doesn't know.

Outstanding job so far by Coach Meyer! I like the sense of urgency and high level of intensity he brings to OSU. I believe his players maintain a strong work ethic on the field. Remember that these are just kids! I did many things in high school and in college that I won't brag about. If OSU team members make a mistake, they should be held accountable. Go Bucks!!!!

Isn't the whole point about winning games? I believe that we won quite a few games with JT and we went to quite a few bowl games. That record speaks for itself. I agree that you can still love and miss JT while recognizing the achievements of Urban Meyer.

The author has no clue what he's writing about. JT brought in plenty of talent from all over.

JT did recruit well outside OH--especially FL--see other post. While he had one big ethical lapse, Urban has already had many small ones with no meaningful discipline--Brionte Dunn, Stoneburner, Storm Klein, etc. This is the reason FL wanted him out (Cam Newton stealing under Meyer) and PSU said no to him before OSU grabbed him. He needs to clean this up as he doesn't need to tolerate it, or we'll be seeing him leave in 4-5 years also.

You can still miss JT while loving that Urban is here. Celebrating Urban doesn't require putting JT down or making a comparison. That being said, you are correct, Meyer is a force at a national level beyond what JT brought to the table. He has been a godsend for OSU football.

There is no question that Urban is a superb recruiter and has the advantage of relationships in the South built during his time at Florida. However, recruiting is a continuum as Coach Tressel and his staff built on the success of John Cooper in Florida and began to penetrate the Mid-Atlantic and Georgia markets. Coach Tressel was able to get quite a few players from western Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois to come to Ohio State. Pryor, Philly Brown, Pittsburgh Brown, Dorian Bell, Andrew Sweat and Jordan Hall from PA; Big Hank, Reid Fragel and James Jackson (MI); Garrett Goebel and Evan Spencer (IL); Mike Brewster, Ryan Shazier, Travis Howard, Etienne Sabino, Carlos Hyde, Jeff Heuerman, Jaamal Berry, Jeremy Cash, Duron Carter and Orhian Johnson (FLA); J.B. Shugarts and Kenny Guiton (TX); Bradley Robey, Cam Heyward, Antonio Henton and Keith Wells (GA); Rod Smith and Joel Hale (IN); and Malcolm Jenkins, Curtis Grant, Conner Crowell, Dominic Clark and Flash Thomas (Mid-Atlantic). In addition, Coach Tressel locked down Ohio.

Urban brought in an unbelievable class so in no way am I denigrating what he did. It was incredible! However, Coach Tressel and his staff were also successful in recruiting out-of-state kids so there is no reason to take a shot at him.

I humbly disagree. I miss Tress a lot. I miss the ground and pound ball control offense. However, Urban certainly can recruit.
