Give Tressel the boot

The NCAA shouldn't suspend Jim Tressel for more than two games. It shouldn't fine him more than $250,000. It shouldn't bar him from spring practice and summer workouts.

After it finishes its investigation, the NCAA should recommend Jim Tressel's termination as head football coach at The Ohio State University.

This incident is further proof that college athletics is spinning out of control, and a message needs to be sent to university presidents and athletic directors who let rule-breaking coaches keep their jobs because they win games and sell tickets.

And that's exactly why Tressel, who said he never considered resigning, didn't tell the athletic department that he had received an e-mail from an attorney indicating OSU football players were selling memorabilia to Edward Rife. Rife, the owner of Fine Line Ink tattoo parlor, is one of the focal points of a federal drug investigation.

Tressel's contract states that he is bound to report any possible violation immediately.

He didn't.

When Regular Joe with a normal job breaches his contract, he gets the boot.

So should The Vest.

"I am sorry and disappointed this happened," Tressel said. "At the time the situation occurred, I thought I was doing the right thing."

Doing the right thing? Surely a deeply religious man with a newly released book titled "Life Promises for Success: Promises from God on Achieving Your Best" knows the difference between right and wrong.

Or does he?

Maurice Clarett and Troy Smith, the highest-profile players of the Tressel era other than current Buckeye quarterback Terrelle Pryor, were both suspended for accepting improper benefits. Tressel also had a player do the same thing at Youngstown State.

It's clear that Tressel, also author of "The Winner's Manual," wants to win at all cost. The mantra is shared by athletic director Gene Smith and university President E. Gordon Gee, who make up the university's "Big Three."

When asked whether he considered firing Tressel, Gee gave a clear indication of who actually runs the university.

"No, are you kidding?" Gee said with a laugh. "Let me be very clear: I'm just hoping the coach doesn't dismiss me."

I rest my case.

At this point OSU has given Tressel a slap on the wrist. The NCAA should break his arm.

Ashamed & Embarrassed

As an alumni, I am appalled at Jim Tressel and the University. The way I see it, Tressel has put the integrity and reputation of Ohio State University in jeopardy and it is shameful. I fully support the termination of Tressel. In fact, I wish that they would suspend him indefinitely pending the investigation results and allow the community and University to begin healing. This whole ordeal is an embarrassment. I have ALWAYS defended my alma mater and the head coach, but I cannot right now and that saddens me deeply. I would rather sacrifice a few crummy football seasons in order to gain the respect for doing the right thing. The University is not all about football and unfortunately, Tressel's actions have reached far beyond the football program. They have put into question the ethical principles of the University. I fear that the University administration is protecting Tressel by not taking a stance. He lied. He violated the terms of his contract. He tried to cover it up & he failed miserably. In fact, Tressel should resign. If he wanted to protect the players, he should step down. Stand up like a man and admit what he did was wrong, that he failed himself, the players, the students, the alumni, and the fans and JUST LEAVE.

Jim Tressel demonstrated that he is not perfect. Neither is anyone else. The violation was minor. Fire him over it? No way. Justice is a double edged sword. Too little is wrong and too harsh is wrong. The punishment hast to fit the crime and this current suspension fits this crime.

Jimmy Tressel is the second best thing to happen to Ohio State football. Woody claimed that you win with good people, and Tressel has done more good and had more positive impact on the program and players in his 10 years than anyone other than Woody Hayes. His indiscretion is a sin of omission, not a sin of commission. There is so much hypocrisy on the part of the NCAAA, players and coaches between what is said and done, how can anyone fault someone who has devoted his life to doing things the right way?

All the Bauserman haters need to think about 1 thing. If Tressel would have followed the rules Bauserman would have been the starting QuarterBack last year. AND THE UNIVERSITY WOULD NOT BE IN THE TROUBLE IT IS NOW!!!! -For god sake he still has his Gold Pants and Big Ten Rings. We would be talking about a National Title run this year not a post season ban. Pryor has screwed us, Bauserman should be given a chance he has earned. However, I am quite sure we will not learn a thing from our past and start Braxton as a Freshman. We did that with Pryor and Benching Boechman to give Pryor game time cost us a USC and the National Championship that year. FOR GOD SAKE PRYOR LOST TO PURDUE!!!! Bauserman could have won that game. I am from ohio, my Livingroom is painted OSU's colors!! If Pryor is played this season I will be cheering for Michigan!!!!!!!

I love and admire Jim Tressel and it pains me in no small measure to suggest that, for the good of the University, he must resign and, barring that, be relieved of his duties. While I don't appreciate the flipant attitude displayed in this editorial or the snarky headline, I can not disagree with the idea that no matter what you think of the rule, the infraction, or the response ... Jim Tressel now must leave his post if the Univeristy is to salvage any sort of dignity or maintain any sort of reputation after everything that had happened. He should have resigned at the original press conference. Ohio State is more than a football program and President Gee needs to step in and say enough is enough.

When Regular Joe with a normal job breaches his contract, he gets the boot. Absolutely true, but Tressel isnt an Regular Joe, when your job provides a company a ton money, that money is used to expand its product, make improvements on infrastructure, it takes a whole lot to remove that person from their office. When it comes to your argument of firing him because of what happened with Troy and Clarett; a whole lot of coaches in the NCAA would be fired. Bottom line, if you are not cheating (even a little) then you are not winning. Reading this, sounds like you have a lot of jealous, and a agenda against the big three. Get over yourself. As for post from the person who is a season ticket holder and will no longer attend until Tressel leaves... Can i buy your tickets?

There are the types of people that encourage and appreciate success and there are those that hate to see others do well. This author, and several of the people commenting on his article are clearly the latter. I love how these Tressel haters know so much about what is going on. Really? You were there? You know what Tressel was thinking? He's not perfect, people and neither are you. Why don't you look at what he has done for the program instead of jumping all over him when negative attention comes to light? What about all of you? Maybe you go day after day leading what you feel is a successful and respectable life, but the minute you make a bad judgement call and you get criticized for that call how do you feel? How do you feel when all the positive things you do are quickly dismissed and thrown out the window? Get your facts straight before running your mouth-oh wait, you can't because you don't like to see others do well and the fact that the media gets more response from negative attention doesn't help either.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. As any true Christian knows all men sin and make mistakes which is why Jesus died on the cross. So all you holier than thou so called christian Buckeye fans need to lighten up unless you can cast the first stone. Tressel was wrong but everyone deserves a second chance. Go Bucks

I am probably the biggest Buckeye fan in the world, and the latest allegations against the Sweater Vest make me want to burn my life-sized "Buckeye Bruce" head that I keep at my mom's house. Clearly, Tressel is a liar and a cheat, even though he told me in his books that he is a man of God. Well, I guess God is surrounding himself with liars and cheats these days.

He needs to be fired, along with that ridiculous AD. And while we are cleaning out the bottom of the bird cage, let's get rid of Gordon "Not Gekko" Gee. He is an embarrassment every time he opens his mouth.

Many facts of the case are still not public. Many of us are following this case through media outlets. These outlets at times fail to disclose all pertinent information or, mitigating circumstances. Only when the rules committee and the athletic director are satisfied all information has been presented should public judgment be made.
I will hold my judgment until a complete investigation is published.

Anyone who understands anything about the nature of federal investigations knows that Tressel did the right thing. Was it right for his players to remain eligible for the season? Maybe not, but it was absolutely right of him to recognize that suspending them in the middle of the season may have compromised the investigation. He was caught in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.
