New OSU head coach Urban Meyer speaks to the media on his right during his introduction as the Buckeyes' coach Nov. 28, 2011. Meyer said recruiting would be one of his primary concerns until he takes control of the team after the Buckeyes' bowl game.

Now that Urban Meyer has been confirmed as Ohio State's next head football coach, he'll turn his attention to the recruiting trail.

Meyer will take the reigns on a 2012 recruiting class currently ranked No. 14 by Scout.com and not ranked in the top 25 by ESPN. The class is led by five-star defensive end Adolphus Washington and five-star running back Bri'onte Dunn.

Meyer made it known during his introductory press conference Monday that he was going to put a heavy focus on recruiting, even saying he was looking forward to recruiting the state of Ohio and making calls to recruits soon after the press conference was over.

"I can't wait to get back involved in that," he said.

Meyer, who was called an "outstanding recruiter" by OSU athletic director Gene Smith in Monday's press conference, has a history of raking in highly ranked recruiting classes.

Meyer's recruiting classes from 2005-2010 at Florida were ranked No. 15, No. 2, No, 1, No. 3, No. 11 and No. 2, respectively, according to Rivals.com.

Steve Helwagen, managing editor of Bucknuts.com, said Meyer might be able to salvage a top-10 class by National Signing Day, which is set for Feb. 1, 2012.

"He's got a national name," Helwagen said. "He's right with (Alabama head coach) Nick Saban right now (as) probably the most famous college football coach out there. I think that's going to open doors."

Saban, for example, has garnered the fourth-ranked recruiting class for the Crimson Tide for 2012, according to Scout.com.

Still, Helwagen said it's best to wait for 2013 for an elite recruiting class at OSU.

"I really wouldn't get too wrapped out or worried about this class," Helwagen said. "Where you're going to see his impact is next year. My guess is he'll have a top five class next year and probably stack one on top of another is my guess."

Part of boosting the talent in those classes is pulling talent out of places Meyer locked down while at Florida.

That includes the state of Florida, which is known for its "SEC speed."

Meyer said it will be tough to recruit the South, especially with powerhouses such as Alabama scooping up talent.

"The SEC is hot right now," he said. "And I've recruited against Alabama as well. They're hot. But so is Ohio State."

Helwagen also said it might be difficult for Meyer to easily sign those players, but his history there will help him.

"It's going to be more of a challenge to get some of those guys to come up to Ohio and play in the Big Ten but he's got the ties back there in Florida to really go in there and try and get some good players," he said.

Recruits have taken varying stances on Meyer's hire.

Washington, who is out of Cincinnati Taft High School, committed to Ohio State Nov. 22 and told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he hoped Meyer would be his head coach.

Meanwhile, Canton GlenOak's Dunn told The Repository Monday that he didn't want to play in a spread offense, which Meyer will be implementing. Dunn has been wavering back and forth between OSU and Michigan, but tweeted Monday that he spoke with Meyer after the press conference.

Finding the athletes to transition from the "Tressel-ball" pro-style and I-formation offenses to a spread won't be much of a problem recruiting-wise, Helwagen said.

"I don't know that it will be as big a transition as some people think it might be," he said. "I think he'll play to his team's strengths on the field next year and take it on a year-to-year basis. He and his staff are obviously going to be looking for guys who fit what they want to do."

In fact, Helwagen said transitioning offensive schemes will have more positives than negatives.

"You're talking about a coach who won two national championships in the last five years," he said. "There aren't many guys out there in coaching that can say they even have one."

Some students said they looked forward to the kinds of prospects Meyer could bring to OSU.

Dustin Stinson, a third-year in sport and leisure studies, is interested to see if Meyer can lure some "Florida speed" to OSU.

"I think he'll recruit speed," he said. "I'm interested to see his Florida contacts and what he can bring from the speed state."

Kyle Becker, a second-year in exploration, believes recruiting will be solid with current coach Luke Fickell still around. Fickell will remain on Meyer's coaching staff next year, though his role is not yet known.

"Recruiting will jolt," Becker said. "I think we need to keep Fickell because he is honestly a good defensive coach and I heard he is a good recruiter."

David Gerad and William Hessler contributed to this story.

Problem with OSU is... they worry way way way to much about Michigan. You gotta be kidding. Worry about the SEC which is who we gotta beat to ever win crystal again. This is about National Championships, not about the state next door. OSU should be way bigger than that.

I'm really excited about "what could be", but can the athletic department get Urban some OSU gear? The only thing I've seen him in "representin'", is this tie.
He should have been at the Duke game, too. Tressel, and Fickell for that matter, definitely embrased tOSU. I just hope Urban loves tOSU like we do. We deserve it.

I was really hoping we'd keep fickell. He seems to get it. Michigan has to be licking their chops at the prospect of playing us now.

wow! tons of hate from you michigan fans. Look, talking about meyer going from one crooked school to another, all those BS arrests, violations and whatever else you guys can come up with is truly sad. Im gonna say it like it is. Brady hoke and michigan had a good year. I mean it couldnt have gotten much worse! If meyer was hired by michigan, as a die hard OSU fan i would be worried! So all the haters ( mostly michigan fans ), just be real. You guys are truly in oh s**t mode and know OSU is back after one down year. OSU will be a better team under meyer and will be back to its winning ways with OHIO talent! BCS bowls here we come! Oh and all the haters n michigan fans u guys are showing your true colors as each day goes. So just admit it: You know OSU is back and will have BCS quality teams and big ten championships once again. Dont that just suck sooo bad!! GO BUCKS!!

I don't know why Dunn and Washington were referred to as 5 star recruits when everything I've seen has them both listed as 4 star recruits. Meyer will do fine recruiting and keeping the program honest - especially since he's keeping Fickell - a good move on his part. Urban is back in Ohio now and feels comfortable here. Besides, for all anyone here knows, the Florida Gator Admin might of forced Meyer to not enforce team sanctions for violating rules.

I don't think he will try to go to a total spread offense on his first year. Rich-Rod tried that at UM, remember where that got him? Meyer knows this is Big Ten football. Rest assured, it will be far different from what we've seen in the last 10 years at OSU, but there will be plenty of room for power running backs. After all, he's going to want to use the current talent and they were not recruited for a spread offense. I want to see what Carlos Hyde can do playing in more than 2 or 3 games, and also Rod Smith (need to cure his fumbling problem though). Hall and Stoneburner are versatile enough to move around.

I,ll believe in his recruiting ability if he stops the best talent in Ohio from going to that school up North and other BigTen schools and brings them into OSU! The manin thing is he must be respected by the Ohio high school coaches.

I think Michigan just has too big of a recruiting jump on us. Scout has them as the #1 class. That's gonna torch us for the next 4 years. go bucks.

No way Dunn stays a Buckeye with a spread offense... he is and will always be a power runner and there is no room for that in Meyer's spread offense.

Too bad, the kid is a talent.

Am I the only sane one here??!

Why is everyone jumping on the Meyer bandwagon? Dude has some serious health issues that are NOT resolved, and will surface again. If he thought Florida was high-pressure, he hasn't seen anything yet. Gee and Smith have drug our school through the mud and should both be gone. NOW, they bring in this clown?! So much for class and integrity. Get ready for arrests and scandal. I love this school, but this is not the direction I was hoping we would go. We cannot afford more trouble.

O-H-I-O!

We Love Dunn !!

I am sure that Meyer will customize an offense to use the talents of Dunn! You are born to be a buckeye Dunn, we want you, welcome you, and love you ! You and Braxton will own the rushing game.. . adn Urban will help you to develop into the total package for the NFL!

1. He quits his position as Florida's Head Coach with reasonable lie about health and family concerns, only to...
2. Take a job as an ESPN commentator (with fellow Buckeye, Spielman) to spy on future competition and gain access to their practices and training facilities. Then he...
3. Throws his former more-competitive-than-ever conference (which he was struggling to complete in) under the bus during first press conference as head coach, complaining of off-the-field problems, while ignoring on-going off-the-field troubles at new school.

Something tells me Ohio State found the right guy.

I hope Dunn stays, but if not, I'll take the Dunn for Meyer trade any day of the week. I'm sure he'll be able to get one or two recruits this year. I'm hoping for a speedster or two. :)
