Ohio State redshirt senior quarterback Joe Bauserman gets hit as he throws a pass against Toledo on Sept. 10, 2011.

With three games in the books for Ohio State football (2-1), the team's quarterback situation isn't any clearer than it was when former Buckeyes' signal caller Terrelle Pryor departed the university on June 7.

While he wouldn't name a starter or say how snaps would be split between quarterbacks, coach Luke Fickell said at a Tuesday press conference that he would allow the quarterbacks, including redshirt freshman Taylor Graham and redshirt sophomore Ken Guiton, to continue to compete against one another in practice.

Both senior Joe Bauserman and true freshman Braxton Miller are currently listed as the starters on the team's weekly depth chart.

"We don't know what the plan is just yet," Fickell said. "We're going to have these guys compete. We know we need to get better. We had a hard time throwing the football."

On Saturday, Bauserman and Miller combined for 4-of-18 passing for 35 yards in OSU's 24-6 loss against Miami. Miller, who threw an interception on his first pass attempt of the game, also fumbled to halt a Buckeyes drive in the fourth quarter.

"I think that's always something you worry about with a young guy," Fickell said. "I think we had two fumbles all last year. I think it's almost two times or three times as many (this season)."

The team has lost three fumbles on the season.

Fickell said he considered Millers' turnovers a cause for concern.

"We turned the ball over, that's the obvious," Fickell said. "We missed some shots, that's obvious as well."

To say that the team missed some shots might be an understatement — Bauserman and Miller couldn't connect with a single Buckeyes' wide receiver in the contest.

All four of the completed passes in Saturday's loss were caught by running backs.

Fickell said he didn't consider using Graham or Guiton during the Miami game, adding that he didn't see anything Graham or Guiton could have done differently from the Buckeyes' quarterbacking tandem of Bauserman and Miller.

Fickell said all four quarterbacks would get a chance to compete for playing time in this week's practice.

"We'll probably give a lot more reps to all those guys (the quarterbacks)," he said. "I don't know how it will work out exactly."

Fickell said he doesn't place the blame for the offense's lack of production on a single player and that the quarterbacks are receiving an undue amount of criticism.

"We (have) to find a way to get our best 11 on the field," Fickell said. "You focus on the quarterback. We focus on the tailback as well. We focus on the middle linebacker as well."

Fickell said that who plays at Ohio Stadium on Saturday will be determined by performance on the practice field throughout the week.

"I don't have the crystal ball," Fickell said. "We know what we think. We're going to see a battle (in practice) and we're going to work at it."

Why all the pushback with Kenny Guiton? Theres NO WAY he can be worse than Bauserman and while I agree that Miller needs to learn, its also important not to overwhelm the guy. Kenny Guiton is at least athletic enough to make plays outside the pocket, and his arm is as live as Bausermans.

Furthermore, with Bauserman, you KNOW what youve got. And thats an average to below average QB. With Guiton, no one knows what he can be. Honestly, look at Troy Smith.he was an unheralded recruit, that sat until given his chance, and when that happened, he bloomed into one of, if not the best QB in OSU history. Is Guiton that guy? Maybemaybe not. Either way, he should at least get a look to start.

Colorado, while a rising team, is beatable and I think this game could be the one that would allow OSU to start a guy like Guiton.

And.my bad on the mis type I obviously meant the Scarlet and Grey game.

I have bleed scarlet and grey my whole life, ran stadium stairs with Tovar and Springs. I could not believe the game I watched against miami. The coach looked absolutly shell shocked. Field the best athletic players we have. Miller, Hall and anyone else who wants to make a impact. If Miller is the guy then play the boy, if he isnt the future Guyton might be the next option for one thing is sure its not Joe B. Come on bucks lets show up on Saturday and field the best players that will give you the option of winning. GO BUCKS!!!!!.

Guiton? Really? Where are you people coming from? Because of a few good plays in a spring game? There's a reason he didn't climb the depth chart despite a good spring game 2 years ago. Put the freshman in and let him learn. This is not the same OSU program we've been use to for the last 9 years, we're gonna lose a few games as we sort out our troubles and get back on track. No....STOP! Let's just go to a wildcat with Jordan Hall back there taking the snaps. Yeh, that's the ticket.

To Anonymous: "Scarlet and RED" game??!! Seriously? I'm not interested in any opinion from a guy who doesn't even know the school colors.

Send Bauserman to the minors to chew bubble game and laugh with the other goofs in the bull pen, and give Kenny Guiton a chance. Settle a team in with Guiton and add some Miller, and at least don't waste precious games to build for the future. The only thing being built with Bauserman is a glass house. Colorado will beat us if coaching stays double minded. You can be certain they are licking their chops to get after Bauserman watching the Miami film. And how about the antsy receivers? Dropped balls in their hands.. that comes from lack of focus, and lack of focus comes from the boardroom. Ohio State is not a sublevel program for a green coach to take time to hone his skills. I don't care how good Bauserman practices, any experienced coach knows that practice is not game time, and Bauserman does not have it. Akron was a sham (good high school teams beat them); the OSU D and flukes salvaged the Toledo game, and a mediocre Hurricane team kicked our tail. It only gets tougher from here on out and the weaknesses are all exposed. Takes good coaching and field leadership now to right this boat. Next year's recruits are already striking OSU from their list.

The reality is, Kenny Guiton should be looked at. He's been there for a couple of years, understands the offense and in the Scarlet and Red game, he put on a clinic. He's as athletic as Miller, has a good arm and can create outside the pocket as well, which, is something that OSU's QB needs to do.

I would not be surprised to hear on Saturday that he's the #2 at least, and possibly even the starter for Saturday. everyone is looking at Colorado like they're an easy W, however, Colorado has some talent and should be 2-1 after narrowly losing to UCLA. Ohio State needs to be ready to go on Saturday, because, they could sneak up and bite OSU if the Bucks aren't careful.

Regarding Luke Fickell, I agree with what you said BuchGrad, in order for a team to gel and create offensive cohesiveness, they need to play and practice together. Fickell keeping everyone in the dark does NOT bode well for them. Guys need to know, and they need to prepare with one another so that everyone can gain confidence in one another.

Fickell's lack of certainty and inability to adapt has me greatly concerned. He just got outcoached by Al Golden who would be middle of the road in the Big 10. Think that Hoke, Dantonio, Zook, Fitzgerald, Pelini, Ferentz and Beilema can't do the same thing...or worse? Wake up.

Regarding Urban Meyer - he's a pipe dream. I know that his book said OSU was one of his dream jobs, but, I think he's destined for something other than OSU either by his doing or the University's decision. I would LOVE to see him there, however, I don't know that he'll go.

I believe that OSU is going to do what they did with Tress and find someone a little less high profile. Someone like Gary Patterson or Chris Petersen make the most sense to me. Both are great coaches, and both have proven their ability to build a program and recruit well, and right now, that's what OSU needs. Being honest, I prefer Patterson. In the Rose Bowl he made Beilema look like a chump.

Don't get it twisted wither, Ohio State (even with sanctions) is possibly the best job in the country. Great fan base, great city, great history and a Goliath program. It's perfect for someone like Meyer, Peterson or Patterson.

Speechless

I'm speechless. Is it not elementary that the worst thing you can do at this stage of the season is "open it up" for competition among FOUR QBs in practice....thus completely diluting the practice reps that EVERYONE gets? Whoever the chosen one is, he needs 1) practice reps and 2) game experience. Miller sure seems, to everyone, like the future. If so, his progress has already been greatly retarded by sharing practice reps and an INEXPLICABLE absence in the Toledo game. Love Fick, he's in a little over his head right now and not being helped by Bollman who (without Tressel) is incapable of creating, leading and adjusting an offense based on available personnel.

Do you really think Urban Meyer is going to come back and coach a busted run down NCAA santioned Buckeye team. Keep Dreaming.

Fickell is totally inept and has got to go. He can't make decisions, keeps his players in limbo as to their status and his decision making during the game is unbelievably bad. Here it is the fourth game of the season and we still don't have a starting lineup. How can our guys work together in practice to synchronize themselves as a team if they don't even know who the team is?

Fickell is a major FUBAR. Get rid of him and bring on Urban Meyer... a coach the Buckeye Nation deserves!

I agree, this year is going to be a bust anyway. Let Braxton play this year so we do not need to have another year of training next year.
Still Hopeful

Ok, I'm going to say it. Braxton Miller has shown the most talent in games. We all know he is the future of OSU football. Let the guy play. Taking him out after one snap, although he messed up, is counterproductive. Let him work through it. He needs to pay to gain confidence. While Bauserman has the most experience, limited as it is, he is not getting the job done. A good game against the Zips and a mediocre game against the Rockets does not make an OSU quarterback starter.
