For the Ohio State women’s basketball, the third time was a charm.
After two losses to Minnesota during the regular season, the No. 9-seeded Buckeyes knocked off the No. 8-seeded Gophers, 58-47, in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament.
The win, which marked the fourth straight for the Buckeyes, was also the ninth-straight time OSU has held its opponent to 60 points or less.
Entering halftime, OSU trailed, 25-24, but when senior guard Tayler Hill got going in the second half, the Buckeyes took the lead and dominated the floor.
Hill totaled 25 points on 6-of-16 shots and junior center Ashley Adams added 14 points on 7-of-8 shots from the floor.
The two combined for 67 percent of OSU’s 58 points.
Adams also grabbed eight rebounds and Hill dished out four assists.
Minnesota sophomore guard Rachel Banham led the Gophers with 20 points on 44 percent shooting. Banham averaged 20.5 points in the teams’ two previous wins against OSU this season.
With the win, OSU is now set to play top-seeded Penn State Friday, having last met the Nittany Lions on Jan. 27 in a 71-56 loss at the Schottenstein Center.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The game, along with all of the Big Ten Women’s Tournament games, will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
