Nebraska fans celebrate the largest comeback in the history of its football program Saturday. The Cornhuskers won 34-27 despite trailing 27-6 in the third quarter.

After Saturday's game at Nebraska, Ohio State alumni, fans and even a former player and Heisman Trophy winner all agree — it's great to have the Conhuskers in the Big Ten conference.

The Buckeyes and Cornhuskers had met twice prior to Saturday, with OSU winning both encounters at Ohio Stadium in 1955 and 1956, respectively. This weekend's game was the first meeting between the teams at the Cornhuskers' Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.

For those Buckeye faithful who followed the Scarlet and Gray into America's heartland, many, including former OSU running back and 1995 Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, said Nebraska belongs in the Big Ten.

"I think (Nebraska) brings a great deal of tradition," George said. "It's a rich tradition. With this being the inaugural game between the two schools as Big Ten opponents, I think it's tremendous."

Having spent the weekend in Lincoln, Larry Lokai, better known to some as the self-proclaimed "OSU Buckeyeman," said Nebraska fans are the most hospitable he has ever encountered.

"There's no question in my mind that Nebraska fans are like being here in Columbus," Lokai said. "(Nebraksa fans) not only welcomed you, but they said ‘What can we do to make your stay more pleasant?' Basically, they made you feel like you were a part of their team.

"I felt like I was talking to Ohio State fans, but in reality I was talking to Nebraska fans."

Alan Orr, 77, of Asheville, N.C., graduated from OSU with a Bachelor's degree in business in 1959 and shared the same sentiments as George and Lokai.

"For the first time in as many years that we've been traveling to Ohio State's road games, Nebraska fans passed us and waved to us," Orr said. "Most of the time, it's a different hand gesture at other schools."

Orr said that OSU fans would appreciate the pregame atmosphere demonstrated by Cornhuskers fans on Saturday.

"It looks the same," he said. "I'm sure that their pregame is just like ours and it's just as rabid."

Hours before kickoff, Buckeye and Cornhusker fans were seen fraternizing as kickoff neared.

Former OSU student John Kinsey, 64, of Akron, Ohio, said Nebraska fans were very respectful.

"Since we arrived in Lincoln, we've been treated absolutely fantastic," Kinsey said. "It's just unbelievable, the welcome feeling they've given us. These people have been just fantastic."

The welcome Nebraska fans gave OSU fans stood in stark contrast to the No. 14-ranked Cornhuskers' treatment of the Buckeyes on the field on Saturday.

After jumping to an 27-6 lead in the third quarter, Nebraska stormed back to claim a 34-27 win. The comeback win, which was witnessed by 85,426 fans, was the largest in Cornhuskers' history.

Despite the loss, Lokai maintained his positive outlook on the Cornhuskers' addition to the conference, saying Nebraska's football tradition is a "very good fit."

"Nebraska football is a way of life," Lokai said. "They've got a tremendous tradition there. You look around and you see all the All-Americans they've had, the national championships. I think it's going to be a great fit."

By Orr's estimation, the Big Ten presidents and chancellors couldn't have selected a better program to join the conference.

"This was a class act getting Nebraska in the Big Ten," he said. "Nebraska is the team to bring in to help the Big Ten. Nebraska is No. 1."

I heard the same thing about OSU fans after the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas. It seems like the fans who travel to away games (from all schools) tend to be better behaved

I thought all the Ohio State Fans I met were great supporters of their team and were not talking trash or vulgar when it looked like the Buckeyes would wipe memorial stadium with huskers, nor were they sore loosers when the tide turned. I must say I enjoyed their company in Lincoln and offered to buy beer for several after the game. Most Badger fans I met were the same way, but I was also mistreated before, during and especially after that game. Badger fans sitting right next to me in the stadium announced they were gonna try to get me kicked out the second they saw I was a husker fan. I spent the entire game getting elbowed, hands all over me, items being spilled or dropped down my back. After the game I thought I was in gang territory with constant heckling, vulgar insults, and threats made most of the walk. I saw parking lots trashed with broken glass and bottles everywhere. I dont know how they could get cars out of there without damaging tires.... So Ohio State Fans have a lot to be proud of.

Was up in Wisconsin last week and was appalled at how classless their fans were. Absoulutely the worst fans I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. They're worse than Colorado and Missouri fans combined. That being said I enjoyed the encounters I had with Ohio State fans. Truly great fans and I hope to make a trip out to Columbus sometime in the near future.

NEBRASKA FANS = the best in College football!!!

The Ohio State Fans i encountered were great!

I made the trip last weekend to Wisconsin, and the fans were classless and very disrespectful. Madison is a place I'd never want to return

I am a Husker from Lincoln and the only bad encounter I had with a non-Husker fan was with a Michigan fan. He was talking crap after the game and the Ohio St fans around us were wondering as much as we were why he was even at this game and not watching his. Ohio St fans were great and hopefully the atmosphere is as good next year over there. Beat Michigan!

Pat,

Thank you for choosing to write an article about the hospitality OSU fans were shown in Lincoln. I sincerely do hope (and feel) that Husker fans will receive the same treatment next year in Columbus. Aside from the obvious ties between our programs with the Pelini's, I think there is just a mutual respect between the elite programs in college football with rich traditions of championships, Heisman winners and fervent fan bases. I also feel the fans reflect the hard-working, no nonsense, "what you see if what you get" attitude of the people in our respective states.

I've never quite understood why "fans" feel the need to make a game day experience anything less than enjoyable. Of my past visits to Ben Ten schools for Husker games (Penn St and Iowa), I have to say that I have NEVER encountered worse fans than I have at Penn St, and Iowa fans were probably on the same level with Colorado and Missouri fans. Yes, there are always going to be the rowdy students but EVERYONE I came across at Penn St was extremely rude. I witnessed people being shoved, spit on, cursed at, beer being thrown, men's wives were insulted, vulgarities were spewed with children present. I was floored. It made the trips to Boulder, CO and Colombia, MO look like field trips.

In any case, I digress. I merely wanted to say that from what I witnessed of Ohio State fans, we do in fact have much in common between our fan bases and I look forward to a mutually respectful (if not always friendly) relationship for years to come. Hats off to your football team for a well fought match in Lincoln, and hold your heads up high because the truly great programs can't be held down for long. Best of luck to your team the rest of the season.

My trip was surreal. First all of Nebraska smelled like fresh baked donuts. I realized that when I was there, that my urine actually came out as fine French perfume. When we lost the game, the whole Huskers cheerleading squad wanted to console me(and a little more!). The most amazing thing was that when I was leaving, I found that I grew wings and was able to fly home all on my own.
I might go back next time.

I'm a Husker fan from Chicago who went to the game. Always thought these fans would click as they are quite similar in many ways. I spoke with lots of Buckeyes who traveled and were having a great time. It was a lot of fun to have you guys in Lincoln and I hope you all enjoyed your time despite the rough ending. I have a lot of respect for the OSU program and wish you guys nothing but the best moving forward. Hopefully we can both celebrate wins against "that team up north".

My wife and I are OSU fans and went to the game. Unbelievable experience. The Husker fans were awesome. Before the game we were in a bar and the fans treated us like we were family. Even at half time with the score 20-6 the fans were nice to us. Not once did we get hackled. After the game the fans wished us a sincere safe trip home. At the bars after the game total strangers offered to buy us drinks. Many fans stopped us in the street to talk. We had over 30 encounters with Husker fans and all of them were pleasent. Every school can learn a few good things from Husker fans

NU fans are the best fans in the NCAA because they choose to be. They know there is no reason to disrespect the visiting fans or teams. All teams in the Big Ten will eventually know that traveling to Lincoln is a pleasant experience, regardless of the game outcome.

We had two OSU students sit next to us and they were fun, positive and definitely wonderful ambassadors for the university. While they were disappointed in the outcome of the game, they said they would go home and tell everyone what a fun time they had and that Nebraska fans were cool. The part they didn't like: the LOOOOOONG drive across Iowa.

I was at the game and thought the same about Ohio St. fans. The few I talked to were very friendly, respectful, and quick to welcome us to the Big 10. It's very nice to feel welcome in a conference. I hope the Ohio State fans had fun in Lincoln (other than the game)

Best of luck the rest of the season!

Whatever,
You have to be a Colorado fan. Stay in the PAC 12 and leave us alone.
Ohio State fans are class people. They tell the truth about the Husker fans.
You are probably tired seeing the successes of the Husker football team.
Jealousy is a terrible thing. Get on some PAC 12 boards and leave us alone.

Nebraska fans are the worst ever so this article is obviously a lie.

Now let's return the favor when they visit Columbus instead of treating them like our fans seem to be known for.
