The Ohio State women’s tennis team is on the ball and ready to start Big Ten play this weekend.The Buckeyes defeated Indiana State Saturday 7-2, and Cincinnati on Sunday 6-3, to improve their overall record to 6-4.”We just wanted to get back on track after our losses the week before,” said coach Chuck Merzbacher. “We’ve been trying to get ready for our up and coming Big Ten matches.”First singles player Kristy Dascoli defeated Kathy Najbert of Indiana State 6-0, 6-4 and Kara Molony of Cincinnati 7-5, 6-0.Battling the flu, second singles player Briana Harris was defeated in both of her singles matches.”Briana was competing well, but not up to her full potential,” Merzbacher said.Third singles player Mandy Yeley won both of her singles matches. She defeated Tina Morales of Indiana State 6-0, 6-2 and defeated Cincinnati’s Amy Trocewicz 6-2, 6-2.Fourth singles player Kadri Kanepi defeated Ann-Sofi Bengtsson of Indiana State 6-2, 6-2 and Katie Kerr of Cincinnati 6-1, 6-2.Playing at fifth singles, Carolina Nahuz defeated Erika Hirth of Indiana State 6-2, 3-0 (retired) and Jennie Newman of Cincinnati 6-2, 6-0. At sixth singles, Monica Koplas defeated Indiana State’s Lyndee Anderson 7-6, 6-2, but lost to Cincinnati’s Nickie Harris 6-4, 6-4.In doubles play, first doubles duo Dascoli and Harris defeated Indiana State’s Najbert and Luciana Espinar 8-4 and defeated Molony and Margie Spray of Cincinnati 8-6.Second doubles team Yeley and Nahuz defeated Bengtsson and Hirth of Indiana State 8-2 and Kerr and Newman of Cincinnati 8-1.”We are still fighting the flu this week, but will show up and play hard,” Merzbacher said. “It can’t always be a smooth road.”The Lady Buckeyes begin Big Ten play Saturday at home. They will face Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Minnesota at 10 a.m. on Sunday. All matches will be held in Jesse Owens West.Ohio State lost to both teams last year on the road. Iowa currently has a record of 6-1 and Minnesota has a record of 5-4, Merzbacher said.”We want to start the Big Ten season 2-0,” Merzbacher said. “We have some tough away meets so we need to use the home court to our advantage.”
