A new decal may alleviate some students’ fears of being towed in the off-campus area. The City of Columbus Parking Division is issuing a new decal that is displayed inside the left rear window, clearly visible for enforcement purposes. The change is due to numerous complaints about permits being difficult to remove from bumpers, worn away by weather conditions or stolen off vehicles. The new decal may lessen such problems and be more beneficial for both permit holders and the city of Columbus, said Kevin McSweeney head of Parking Operations. Some streets that require city parking permits include West Oakland, West Northwood, and West Norwich Avenues from the alley west of High Street to Neil Avenue; part of East Patterson; all of East Oakland, East Northwood, and East Norwich Avenues from the alley east of High Street to Indianola Avenue; and East 12th, East 13th, and East 14th Avenues from Pearl Alley to Summit Street.People living in the permit areas are told by their landlords about needing a parking permit, McSweeney said. ‘A lot of people who park without permits get ticketed and sometimes towed, especially on football Saturdays,’ said John Hrivnak, OSU student and resident of East Northwood Avenue. Residents often petition for parking hours because it limits street parking to residents only and makes it easier for residents to keep the streets clean, McSweeney said..’Having a parking permit isn’t really a choice but without permits the streets would be filled and residents wouldn’t have a place to park,’ said Johanna Queck, a resident on East Northwood Avenue.Residents may purchase parking decals at the City of Columbus Parking Office, located at 109 N. Front St.First time permit holders will need some type of proof of residency, car registration and a check or money order for $25.00, McSweeney said. Off-Campus Student Services, located at 104 East 15th Ave., is holding a residential permit sale through September 27. Its hours are 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
