Columbus Police Chief James G. Jackson will be allowed to report to work today. Jackson has been reassigned to perform police related tasks during normal hours at the administrative offices at the Division of Fire, according to a letter sent to Jackson by Safety Director Thomas W. Rice. In addition, Jackson will be assigned police related special assignments. The letter stated that Jackson is still barred from police facilities unless he has permission from Rice to enter. He will have use of his assigned police vehicle.’We want to be sensitive to the opinions issued by City Attorney Ron O’Brien,’ Rice said in a statement. ‘This reassignment will allow the Chief to continue his duties, yet will not interfere with the process of the Mayoral Examination.’Jackson being allowed back to work was a result of recommendations from O’Brien, Rice said. Last Thursday, Columbus Mayor Greg Lashutka ordered the Police Chief reassigned to his home while police misconduct investigations take place.
