Grumpy old duo Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon entertain audiences once again with the comedy “Out to Sea.” Matthau plays Charlie, a wildly dressed bachelor, who is in financial trouble and needs to find a way to get rich quick. Charlie talks his skeptical brother-in-law Herb, played by Jack Lemmon, into taking a luxurious cruise to the Caribbean in hopes of meeting rich women.Charlie leaves out a few minor details ‹ their drab, gray room is located deep within the ship with no window and little room to stand, they have to share their little bathroom and they have to earn their stay on the ship as dance hosts.Their stay becomes more challenging when they meet their boss, the ship’s cruise director, Gil. Played by Brent Spinner, Gil is a militant man pursuing a promotion from the ship’s owner, Mrs. Carruthers, played by Rue McClanahan.Matthau steals the show with witty, one-line remarks and funny tactics to win the affections of the young, dazzling Liz, played by Dyan Cannon.Oh, and there’s one more glitch to this comedy ‹ Charlie does not know how to dance. Herb, an accomplished dancer, tries to teach Charlie aboard the ship, but Charlie has his own style of dancing. This is apparent when Charlie asks Mrs. Carruthers for a dance. While the veteran actors are no stranger to making audiences laugh with their one-liners, it was their dancing scenes which had the crowd in hysterics. Comedy turns to romance by the end of the film when Charlie and Herb find love. “Out to Sea” is an uplifting comedy you could watch a second time.
