Eight teams from across the Midwest, each with two men and two women, grappled up the climbing wall, raced through an obstacle course and ran in a six-mile relay hoping to win the all-expenses paid trip to Hollywood courtesy of Nike. The Ohio State Randoms won third place in the Nike Swoosh Challenge at the Jesse Owens Recreation Center-South on Sunday. The team members were Ryan Heath, Jen Macy, Jena Suhadolnik and Steve Suing. Each team competed in the Nike Swoosh Challenge at OSU, one of 10 locations across the country hosting the challenge competition. “Ohio State was chosen because of its location, size and prestige,” said Liz Davis, assistant director of fitness and conditioning for OSU.Davis serves as the OSU consultant for Campus Concepts which is the organization that created the fitness competition and coordinated the sponsors. Besides Nike, Diet Pepsi and Aquafina also sponsored the event, Davis said. Prizes for the fitness competition included a Nike warm-up jacket, sports duffel bag, t-shirt, water bottle and socks for all team members, Davis said. The Swiss Army Renegades from Eastern Michigan University beat the seven other teams and won the California trip from May 15-17 in addition to the other prizes.Syracuse University, Arizona State University and the University of Southern California also hosted their own competitions.Winners from each of the regional Nike competitions will compete in the national competition.”The Nike challenge was designed to increase participation of fitness activities in a fun and festive environment,” said Jessica Dittmar, the graduate administrative associate for fitness programs at OSU. “It gave students a chance to experience activities such as the rock climbing wall that OSU doesn’t offer.”
