U2 just won’t quit.Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen continue their glorious evolution towards higher musical ground with the innovative nature of their new album “Pop.”The band takes a successful crack at more dance-oriented techno grooves with the first three tracks, “Discotheque,” “Do You Feel Loved” and “Mofo.”Sounds reminiscent of older albums such as “The Joshua Tree” and “Achtung, Baby” can be found on the second release form the album, “Staring at the Sun” and also on the tuneful, mellow track, “If God Will Send His Angels.”The second half of the album also diverges heavily from the more traditional U2 motifs with “Miami,” “Please,” and “If You Wear That Velvet Dress.” “Miami” relies heavily on the power of Bono’s vocals and lyrics as opposed to the strength of guitar-driven melodies found on all the other tracks.Bono and The Edge continue to pump out great lyrics on “The Playboy Mansion,” a song dealing with the commercial, material and degenerate nature of society.Like the title, the album does have more of an up-beat “Pop” flavor than previous albums. However, U2’s pop tone manages to avoid sounding as annoying, played-out and fluffy as most current pop artists.Although fans of “old school” U2 may find “Pop” a little too techno-driven for their taste, anyone who has followed U2 through the years will see this album as the next logical progression in their music. If you don’t have the CD, it is a definite must have for anyone who appreciates U2.Dammit, it’s U2. They just don’t produce bad albums (except for maybe that little “Zooropa” incident).
