The No. 3 Ohio State wrestling team kicked off its Big Ten schedule with a mixed performance this weekend.

On Thursday, the Buckeyes were able to start the season with a 34-12 win against Indiana. On Sunday, however, OSU fell to two-time defending national champion Minnesota 20-15.

The Buckeyes have had success against the Hoosiers before, leading the all-time series 42-36, including victories the previous six meetings.

OSU started the match slowly against Indiana, losing both the 133 and 141-pound weight classes.

At 141 pounds, OSU’s Jeff Ratliff faced Coyte Cooper, who is ranked No. 8 in the country. Ratliff got within one point of Cooper in the third round only to get taken down. He eventually lost the match 11-8.

The Buckeyes got back on track with a win at 149 pounds when Josh Daugherty turned Indiana’s Matt Cooper into a pretzel and pinned him in 51 seconds.

OSU coach Russ Hellickson said Daugherty has an unorthodox style.

“If you’re not ready for him, he’ll make it a mismatch,” Hellickson said.

In the 157-pound class, No. 2 Keaton Anderson extended his winning streak to 13 after beating Indiana’s Isaac Knable 16-0 in the first period.

The Buckeyes’ success continued at 165. OSU’s John Clark started his match off a little slower with a scoreless first round against Alex LaPoint.

Clark quickly made up for the slow start, picking up the pace in the second round. He finally shut the door in the third, winning by a technical fall with 49 seconds left in the match.

“It’s just my style,” Clark said. “I begin to wear them out.”

OSU and Indiana split the 174 and 184-pound weight classes.

Buckeye Anton Talamantes, ranked No. 7 in the country, snapped No. 5 Pat DeGain’s 18-match win streak with a 7-5 overtime decision at 197 pounds.

No. 2 Tommy Rowlands put the exclamation point on the Buckeye win with his ninth pin of the season on Joel Powers after slightly more than a minute of the first period had evaporated.

On Saturday, the Buckeyes started slow again, but even winning the last four matches was not enough to knock off the Golden Gophers.

Anderson picked up his 14th straight victory with a win over reigning national champion Luke Becker in the 157-pound match.

Clark then pulled off a dramatic upset of No. 3 Jacob Volkman. Clarke broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown with just eight seconds remaining in the period.

The two battled to a 1-1 tie with less than a minute remaining before Clark scored a two-point takedown with just eight seconds remaining in the match to get a 3-1 victory.

The Buckeyes continue the conference schedule Thursday when they travel to Penn State.
