One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For filmmakers Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher, those are words to live by.

Pickett and Prueher are coming to Columbus with their latest rendition of the “Found Footage Festival,” a compilation of video found at garage sales, thrift stores and in dumpsters nationwide.

The videos, ranging from home movies to old exercise tapes, are edited together and sprinkled with a healthy dose of amusing commentary.

Prueher said this is their fourth volume of the show and it includes all new material. They visited Columbus last year with the show’s third volume and are returning because “people seem to get it.”

Touring cities around the country isn’t just an opportunity to show off. The duo also use the visits as an opportunity to find new material.

“Every time we’re in a new city for a show, we get there early and hit the thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, etc.,” Prueher said.

Pickett and Prueher dedicate time every year to review newly found video and update their show.

“We take three months to lock ourselves in an apartment and watch tapes,” Prueher said. “The show we’re bringing to Columbus is all stuff we’ve found over the last year.”

Though the “Found Footage Festival” has only existed for the last five years, the pair — friends since the sixth grade — have been collecting footage for years.

“It started when I was a freshman in high school and found a video in the McDonald’s break room,” Prueher said. “It was insulting, dumb and entertainingly awful — it was bad in all the right ways.”

Prueher smuggled the video, titled “Inside and Outside Custodial Duties,” out of the restaurant to share with Pickett.

“We started thinking that there must be other videos like this out there,” he said. “Five or six years ago we decided to take out collection out of the living room and put it in a movie theater.”

Both filmmakers have an eye for comedy, having written for the satirical newspaper The Onion. Prueher has also worked for “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Colbert Report.”

Prueher hopes their show will be an entertaining and interactive experience, describing it as “a less annoying ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show.'”

“It’s kind of a guided tour through our video collection,” he said. “We just pile on the footage we think is the funniest.”

The show takes place at 9:30 p.m. at the Drexel East Theatre located at 2254 E. Main St. in Bexley. Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at foundfootagefestival.com.
