The modern ballet dance company Ailey II will be performing at the Capitol Theatre on Feb. 27.

Presented by CAPA, the show will feature the group performing “Echoes,” “Movin’ On” and “Revelations.”

“I think that when you experience Ailey II, you discover something about yourself,” said Tyrone Walker, who has performed for Ailey II since 2007.

“The show takes you on a journey, and it makes you take a look at yourself.”

Ailey II emphasizes storytelling, emotion and freedom of expression as the primary focus of the performances.

“With Ailey II, we’re not just portraying characters,” Walker said. “We’re portraying ourselves.”

The first piece they will perform in Columbus, “Echoes,” was created by Vietnamese choreographer Thang Dao.

“With ‘Echoes’ I love the quality of the movement,” Walker said. “It feels really good. It’s very slow, you use all of your body and everybody dances together.”

The final piece, “Revelations,” is the signature performance of Ailey II. Written by Alvin Ailey himself in 1960. “Revelations” is a story that begins with the hardships of slavery and ends with the triumph of freedom for African-Americans.

“Revelations” combines gospel songs, spirituals and the blues to convey a wide range of emotions throughout the story. The apex of the piece is reached during the solo “I Wanna Be Ready,” about the preparation for death and judgment.

“The solo ‘I Wanna Be Ready’ really made me realize how important so many things were in life,” Walker said. “You have to lose yourself when you’re performing it. It’s about more than just yourself.”

Founded in 1974 by Ailey, Ailey II is composed of some of the most talented students from the Ailey School, a prestigious dance academy in New York City. The show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from the Ohio Theatre Box Office and Ticketmaster.
