You can spend blocks to rock this weekend.

The Ohio Union Activities Board is looking to transform food joint Woody’s Tavern into a rock ‘n’ roll venue, as it brings in three local Columbus bands — Sleep Feet, Fingers and Bummers — for its Local Triple Decker concert Friday.

MacGregor Obergfell, president of the OUAB and fourth-year in molecular genetics and psychology, said the idea was to use the popular on-campus venue to shine a spotlight on some of Columbus’ musical talent.

“OUAB has had a long history of doing live music shows in Woody’s Tavern,” Obergfell said in email. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase some local talent and give students an idea of what is happening musically in Columbus.”

While Obergfell oversaw the process, it was Devin Bettineschi, concerts committee chairman for OUAB and fourth-year in microbiology, and Cassandra Zahran, member of the concerts committee, leader of the live music subcommittee and second-year in communication, who really put together the three-band set.

Bettineschi explained his excitement for the Local Triple Decker concert and said he hopes it is just the first of many.

“The plan for the Local Triple Decker is to create an event that might happen two times a semester that students can get excited about each time they see a unique local lineup announced,” Bettineschi said in an email. “I feel that most students at Ohio State are hungry to discover new music and I am fairly confident that people will walk out of Woody’s on Friday with a desire to hear more from the bands that they just heard.”

Zahran said in an email each band had its own sound to bring to the Union.

“Fingers has a lighter sound, made up of rock ‘n’ roll bluesy guitar riffs, desert-sound percussion and a soothing, modulated voice,” Zahran said. “I imagine Fingers’ sound will welcome quite a few passing-by students in the Union.”

Zahran said Bummers is a “combination of beach fuzz, garage-indie rock and soul.”

“When you’re at a Bummers show, you’re pretty much at a beach party with your closest, most free-spirited friends, sans the sand. Everyone is a Bummer,” Zahran said.

She described Sleep Feet as a group inundated with the tried-and-true basics of rock music.

“Sleep Fleet is a combination of all sorts of rock,” Zahran said. “When you hear these guys, you want to be wearing your dirtiest, oldest pair of Chucks and a leather jacket, while lighting your diary on fire.”

Zahran said she was “stoked” about the Local Triple-Decker show and said Ohio State students shouldconsider arriving costume-clad.

“It’s a rock-show, beach-rock and alternative-rock show, all in one place,” Zahran said. “It’s basically a pre-party for your Friday night, live music catered directly to you. You can show up in a coconut-bra or a choker-necklace with spikes. Respectively, anything goes.”

The Local Triple Decker concert is set to begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Woody’s Tavern in the Ohio Union. Admittance is free.
