The No. 4 Ohio State women’s hockey team (7-3, 3-1 WCHA) continued its road trip, facing the No. 10 St. Lawrence Saints in their second-consecutive top 10 matchup and their third of the season. The Buckeyes split the series, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second game 6-1.

Game 1

Despite Ohio State only allowing one power play goal heading into the game, St. Lawrence took advantage of early mistakes by the Buckeyes in the first period to score two power play goals and take the lead.

The first was scored by sophomore defenseman Skylar Podovey 5:52 into the first period, with senior forward Justine Reyes and junior forward Kalie Grant recording the assists. Less than five minutes later, the second power play goal was scored by junior forward Steph Keryluk with assists coming from Podovey and graduate student forward Nadine Edney.

Redshirt junior defensemen Jincy Dunne started things off for the Buckeyes scoring her first goal of the season 8:52 into the second period to close the gap to 2-1.

Momentum continued to shift in the favor of the Buckeyes as, 30 seconds into the third period, sophomore forward Tatum Skaggs scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the match, with assists credited to freshman defenseman Madison Bizal and Jaclyn Reeves.

However, despite outshooting St. Lawrence in the third period 14-5, it was the Saints that found the net to take the lead 3-2. Halfway through the third period, sophomore forward Natalie Wozney scored the deciding goal with assists by Grant and sophomore forward Charlea Peterson.

Ohio State did everything they could to tie it up and keep the game going, even going as far to pull freshman goaltender Andrea Braendli with a minute thirty left to go in the game to give the offense an extra attacker, but the Saints’ defense held strong to clinch the win.

Game 2

The second game was all Buckeyes as the women’s hockey team came out with a vengeance after its loss the day before, starting fast and scoring three goals in the first period to quickly take the Saints out of the game.

Ohio State saw Reeves get her first goal of the season in first period, with assists coming from sophomore forward Emma Maltais and senior forward Charly Dahlquist.

The rest of the first period was the Dahlquist show, as goals two and three were scored by the forward for her third and fourth goals of the season.

The lone goal for the Saints also came in this period as senior defenseman Lydia Grauer scored another power play goal for St. Lawrence 6:17 into the first period, making this the third power play goal for the Saints in this series.

Two of the remaining three goals for Ohio State came in the second period. The first saw freshman forward Sara Saekkinen get her first goal of her college career with about six minutes left in the second period, with Dunne and Jacques combining to get assists on the goal.

The second came with less than thirty seconds left to go in the second period as sophomore forward Tatum Skaggs scored her sixth goal of the season with senior defenseman Lauren Boyle and senior forward Madison Field getting assists.

Inthe third period, the last goal for the Buckeyes was an empty net goal scored by Maltais, scoring on a St. Lawrence power play. Dahlquist got her third point of the game with an assist on the goal.

Braendli had another stellar performance with 42 saves to keep the Saints from making this an offensive shootout.

Ohio State comes back home next week for a WCHA matchup against  St. Cloud State. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, November 2.
