Ohio State University Board of Trustees chairman Michael Gasser announced his resignation Friday in an email sent to University President Michael V. Drake and the rest of the board, effective immediately.

Gasser stated in the email that he no longer had the time to commit to the job due to personal, private issues, but said “it has been an honor to serve as a trustee.”

Gasser has served as a Board member since 2012 and chairman since June 2018, according to the Columbus Dispatch. His term was set to expire in May 2021.

Ohio State spokesman Chris Davey said in a statement that senior vice chair Tim Smucker will preside over the full university Board meeting May 31.

“Mr. Gasser’s service to Ohio State is deeply appreciated,” Davey said. “He has been an extraordinarily valuable chair and member of the board, and we wish him the very best.”

According to the Dispatch, Gasser is the second Board member to resign within the year.
