Clean laundry will no longer come at a price for students living in university-managed residence facilities.

Starting in the fall, washers and dryers will be available for use at no charge for students living in residence halls, the Buckeye Village community center and Greek houses managed by Ohio State, University Spokesperson Dave Isaacs said.

The previous cost per load of laundry was $1.50 to wash and $1.25 to dry, according to the housing website.

“Some other universities have moved toward this, and so we looked very closely at what they were doing and how they were doing it,” Isaacs said. “We decided that this was something that we could do, and certainly it would be helpful and convenient to students, so we made the decision to go forward.”

Isaacs said that in the past, students paid for their laundry with BuckID cash via a BuckID card reader or with coins.

David Mack, a second-year in security and intelligence, said the change in laundry policy will come as a stress-relief for him when he moves into Torres Hall for fall semester.

“In Smith-Steeb and Park-Stradley — I lived in both — I had to pay attention to how many loads I was doing because the washers couldn’t hold all the dirty clothes at one time,” Mack said. “So I don’t think I’ll have to pay attention to that quite as much.”

Isaacs said posters will be hung around campus by the university’s washer and dryer vendor to provide tips on the most effective ways to do laundry.

In order to be as environmentally conscious as possible, housing recommends students wash full loads of laundry using cold water only and as little soap or detergent as possible.
