The No. 7 Ohio State women’s hockey team (9-3-4) picked up a win and a tie on the road against Colgate (8-6-3) this past weekend, extending its unbeaten streak to six games.

Game 1

The weather report was clear in Hamilton, New York, but the Ohio State women’s hockey team made it snow goals inside the Raiders’ ice rink Friday.

In an offensive flurry, three Ohio State players netted two apiece, and four in the second period, and the Buckeyes stunned Colgate 6-2.

The action kicked off with junior forward Liz Schepers scoring two goals in the first period. The first came off a turnover forced by Ohio State senior defenseman Jincy Dunne. She dished it to junior forward Emma Maltais who passed the puck to Schepers who put it away.

Schepers’ second goal was a put back off a shot by Dunne and came with three minutes left in the first to put the Buckeyes up 2-0.

The offense heated up even more in the second period, with a total of six goals scored in the period.

Colgate struck first with a goal by freshman forward Darcy Lappan to make the score 2-1, but less than a minute later sophomore forward Sara Saekkinen found senior forward Rebecca Freiburger from behind the net. Freiburger put it away to re-extend the lead to two.

Just 25 seconds later Freiburger, again assisted by Saekkinen, found the back of the net a second time to put the Buckeyes up 4-1.

Maltais tacked on another goal, then Colgate scored, then Maltais added another to give Ohio State a 6-2 lead at the end of two periods.

After the noise made in the first two periods, the third period was relatively quiet, with no goals scored.

Ohio State junior goaltender Lyndsey Wallace had 23 saves on the day and tallied her third career win.

Game 2

After the eight goals scored in their first matchup on Friday, Saturday’s game between Ohio State and Colgate felt was a tough, physical, defensive battle.

Ohio State junior forward Emma Maltais tied the game eight minutes left in the third to send the game to overtime, but neither team was able to convert and the second game of the weekend series between the Buckeyes and the Raiders ended in a 1-1 tie.

Colgate scored its one and only goal of the game ten minutes into the first period. It was freshman forward Sammy Smigliani who converted on the Raiders first power play opportunity of the game and gave them an early 1-0 lead.

That’s where the score stayed until Ohio Stater junior forward Emma Maltais scored the equalizer with just eight minutes left in the game. The shot deflected off a Raiders player and slipped past senior goaltender Liz Auby.

The Buckeyes caught a penalty half way through the 5-minute overtime and had to weather another Raiders power play just to finish with the tie.

Ohio State returns home to host Cornell Nov. 29 and Nov. 30.
