Former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith was sentenced to serve 20 days in jail Friday by a Delaware County court.
Judge Marianne Hemmeter handed Smith a sentence of 180 days after being found guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor in December for a violation of a civil protection order filed by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith, according to a court docket filed Friday.
However, 160 days of his sentence are suspended, meaning Smith will serve 20 days in custody, including one day of credit from his initial arrest May 9, 2019.
Smith was arrested in May by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office following an altercation at an elementary school that violated his civil protection order. Smith was taken to Delaware County Jail after faculty at Scioto Ridge Elementary School did not let him pick up his children.
The former Buckeye assistant coach was fired by Ohio State on July 23, 2018 following accusations of domestic abuse from Smith, that led to her filing the civil protection order.
The domestic abuse allegations led to an Ohio State Board of Trustees investigation that leveled a three-game suspension without pay for former head coach Urban Meyer and a three week suspension without pay for athletic director Gene Smith for their handling of Smith on Aug. 22, 2018.
Smith was also handed a fine of $750 and was put on probation until December 2022, the docket said.
