“Karen Holbrook knew we had a football team?”
That was the first thought that ran through my head when I heard our “esteemed” university president speaking out against the rioting after the Michigan game. My second thought was, “No, she probably thinks they are rebelling against too many reading assignments in English (18th Century British Lit, anyone?).”
Not until I picked up Wednesday’s Lantern did I realize that she has been here for 100-plus days. Also, until a week ago, I could not have picked her out of a lineup (she made an appearance at a lecture I was required to attend). Now, I’m not saying that she has to don a bow tie like Gordon Gee, nor does she have to sport a goofy grin and glasses like Brit Kirwan, but could she please at least make an attempt to have a voice in the university that she just happens to be president of?
Though I don’t always agree with everything I read in The Lantern (college would be pretty boring if I did), I have to commend the editors for expressing their opinions on our MIA leader.
Just as an afterthought, how about some psychology students do a survey and put together a board with five pictures of older women and see who can actually identify Holbrook? I’ll even submit a picture of my grandmother, and I’ll bet 10 to 1 that more people will pick my language-barriered Austrian grandma over her.
