I read a rather interesting comment about abortion in Tuesday’s Lantern. In an article about VOX, a student group that supports abortion, Jessica Venesky said, “there are so many children born unwanted or in poverty, and we want every child to be born to a parent that wants them.”
The remark was intended, I take it, as an argument for abortion rights. However, rather than supporting abortion, the comment sheds more light on the character of the person who said it and the narcissism of the culture that repeats it. Instead of doing what is necessary to help care for children in this world and assist in giving them loving, nurturing environments, she’d opt to kill the child.
So people want me to believe that the best solution to unwanted children and children born in poverty is to kill them? If you are against unwanted pregnancies and the like, isn’t that an odd way to get rid of the problem?
Besides, the overwhelming majority of abused children in this nation stem from wanted pregnancies, so it is a grand illusion to think that abortion will cure the problem of loving and nurturing children.
In conclusion, the old “unwanted pregnancy” line seems to me tired and worn out. If you want me to believe your cause is a noble one, you have to do better than that.
