Over 100 Ohio State students hoping to become the next Stone Cold Steve Austin or Cindy Crawford showed up at the Ohio Union yesterday to take part in a contest to select a college student for the next National Dairy Council “Got Milk?” advertisement. The Milk Mustache campaign, in its fourth year, has come to OSU seeking student models to promote the benefits of drinking milk, said Amy Rossi, a dietitian and program coordinator for the Ohio Dairy Council. The campaign is traveling to 50 campuses throughout the country, with plans to post the picture of the campus winner on their website at www.whymilk.com. The OSU winner’s picture will also be published in the Lantern and the national winner will have his or her picture published in Rolling Stone. Danielle Blair, a junior international business major, said that she had her picture taken because she thought it would be fun and because she is a big milk drinker.”I drink three glasses a day. Big glasses,” Blair said. “I like the taste, but it has to be cold. And it’s good for nails.”That’s good news for the Dairy Council, which started the campaign to encourage Americans, and especially college students, to drink more milk, Rossi said.Adults should consume three servings of dairy products each day, with one serving equal to one cup of milk or yogurt, or one slice of cheese, Rossi said. However, Americans, on average, consume about one serving of milk each day, which deprives them of the benefits that drinking milk provides. There are also studies that show milk may help prevent colon cancer and reduce blood pressure, Rossi said. The Dairy Council has been cooperating with Rolling Stone magazine for this campaign to appeal to the college age group, Rossi said.Simeon Oyeyemi, a junior history of art major, also took part in the contest, both for the milk and the possibility of national exposure.”When I start drinking milk, I just keep drinking,” Oyeyemi said.
