Students met with neighborhood volunteer groups at an open house Wednesday evening held by Project Community of Off-Campus Students Services.Representatives of five volunteer groups; AmeriCorps, Neighborhood Services, Inc., Buckeye Literacy Volunteers, Address Unknown and the Environment Focus, spoke about opportunities for students to get involved with the community.Cynthia Newberry, an OSU graduate student and co-coordinator of the event, said ‘We need to get back into community.’College students are privileged and community involvement is their obligation, she said. Students can learn a lot through community services.Sarah Schepker, sophomore majoring in social work, agree with Newberry. ‘I can actually get so much out of it,’ she said. Schepker doesn’t think enough students are involved in community service. So many students focus on beer and partying instead of getting back to the community, she said.Ellen Rubin, volunteer coordinator of Directions For Youth, a counseling organization for youth and mental health, said they always need more male volunteers.’We need women, too, but kids needs big brothers,’ Rubin said.Denise Youngsteadt-Parrish, director of Neighborhood Services, Inc. said students need to be educated about reality. ‘Most poor people didn’t ask to be poor and they are struggling just like most students to get ahead whatever the way they can,’ she said.
