The Ohio State men’s soccer team had a strong week, recording two victories to improve their overall record to 6-4-1.Yesterday, the Buckeyes journeyed to Madison, Wis. to take on the Badgers in front of 449 people in a Big Ten game. OSU and Wisconsin were tied with Indiana University for the lead in the Big Ten conference. With their victory, the Buckeyes stayed tied with Indiana as the only two undefeated teams in conference play. The game remained scoreless until OSU freshman forward Nick Konerman scored the game’s only goal and his first career goal in the 62nd minute of play. The goal combined with goalkeeper Jon Lowery’s third shutout of the season were enough for a Buckeye victory.The Buckeye’s physical games continued in Madison with a combined 38 fouls being called, but only one yellow card was issued, to Wisconsin.Last Wednesday, the Buckeyes defeated the Wright State Raiders in front of 140 fans, in double overtime, at the North Field of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Buckeyes controlled the first half, outshooting the Raiders 6-0. The first goal didn’t come until the second half, when OSU sophomore walk-on Tony Monroe headed a cross from midfielder Roger Roush past the Raider goalie in the 50th minute of play.The Raiders came right back and evened up the score in the 55th minute of play, when a shot deflected off the OSU goalpost into the goal.Wright State had a chance to win the game in the second overtime on a penalty kick, but freshman goalkeeper Kerry Thompson came up with the save. Freshman midfielder Mario Catenacci came off the OSU bench to score the game winner and first goal of his career on a direct kick in the 110th minute.The Buckeyes and their opponents have combined for 83 fouls and nine yellow cards in their last two games.
