Ohio State football player Dee Miller played in the Rose Bowl and doesn’t appear to be handicapped. The school doesn’t list his teammate Stanley Jackson as a faculty member. But Miller and Jackson have been using a handicap permit and faculty permit, respectively, to park their cars close to class. Both players arrived at the Orton Hall parking lot Thursday morning and parked in two-hour ‘A’ permit spaces before entering Mendenhall Lab.Miller, a sophomore wide receiver from Springfield, arrived at 8:28 a.m. The car he was driving had a temporary handicap parking permit hanging backwards on the rearview mirror.Jackson, a junior from Patterson, New Jersey, arrived at 8:34 a.m., his car had a paper, temporary ‘A’ permit taped to the inside of the windshield.Matt Lefebvre, a senior majoring in environmental sciences, said while on his way to class in a nearby building he has seen the players parking in the lot on a daily basis since the second week of the quarter.Miller said he got the handicap permit because of an injury he suffered this season. The permit issue date was listed as May 21, 1996.’I could (park in a handicap space), but I just don’t,’ Miller said. ‘I’m not that handicapped, somebody else might need it.’Rose Dodson, administrative secretary for Student Health Services, said only three departments may issue handicap permits: Student Health Services, Transportation and Parking Services and the Office for Disability Services.’Our office did not give Miller a temporary handicap sticker to my knowledge,’ Dodson said. Sarah Blouch, director of Transportation and Parking, said, ‘Our records do not show issuing a handicap permit with that number to that person (Miller).’ Officials at Disability Services said they are not allowed to release information about handicap permit holders.OSU Associate Athletic Director Archie Griffin said he did not know that the two players had the permits and that Miller had suffered an injury during his career at OSU, but played in OSU’s Rose Bowl victory Jan. 1. Injured athletes sometimes do receive handicap permits if they have a note from their physician, but a disability permit cannot be used by an non-handicapped person, Blouch said.’If we find them on campus with illegal permits their cars will be towed and given a $100 ticket,’ she said. The fact that Jackson has an ‘A’ permit on his car, a white Jeep Cherokee, has come up before, Jackson said.’The sticker is legit,’ Jackson said. ‘I’ve already been called by Traffic and Parking.’Jackson said the ‘A’ permit is not registered in his name, but is a friend’s permit who drives Jackson’s car to work at OSU every night.’Regardless of whether or not it’s a good sticker, that still creates problems,’ he said. ‘People are always worried about what athletes are doing instead of worrying about what they’re doing.’As the interview ended Jackson said this kind of reporting is why people hear about photographers getting thrown to the ground. Blouch sais she didn’t know where Jackson had received his sticker.’Stanley doesn’t qualify for one (an ‘A’ permit), nor have we issued one to him,’ she said. The sticker could be used on Jackson’s car if the person who bought the permit listed Jackson’s car as the vehicle the permit was to be used on, Blouch said.
