In your face! The intensity of Saturday night’s men’s volleyball game was unfortunately not enough to push the Buckeyes to victory. 10th-ranked Lewis University snatched the fifth game 15-11, defeating 15th-ranked Ohio State. The Flyers took the first two games by matching scores of 15-12, before the Bucks came back to win games three and four, thus leading to the decisive game five. Senior outside hitter Dan Mihacevich scored a match high 31 kills, along with senior middle hitter Gary Wrobel impressing the audience hitting .733 for the match, carrying only one error in 30 attempts. Eye-opening performances by freshman Jose Pereira, Angel Aja, and Rene Esteves were not enough to overcome the offensive game of the Flyers. All six starters for Lewis scored double figure kills, also bringing in team highs for both blocks and assists. ‘We were very inconsistent,’ said OSU coach Pete Hansen. ‘Both teams were inconsistent. We dug ourselves a hole in the first two games. I’m frustrated that we let it go to that point. We should have given a better effort,’ Captain Dan Mihacevich agreed with Hansen’s remark on inconsistency within the team. ‘We need consistency on offense, defense, blocking, serving, basically everything,’ Mihacevich said. ‘It was a matter of a handful of plays that required better concentration. It was a match we could’ve won.’With Ohio State hosting the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship in May, what will it take to see the scarlet and gray grasp this home court opportunity? ‘A better performance, ‘ Hansen said. ‘ Volleyball is a momentum game. You cannot afford service errors, blockers in the net, etc.. The key is consistency and mental toughness.’The Bucks travel to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on February 14, with a 7-4 record overall.
