MTV singled out Ohio State last night when it interacted with a student via a computer and video camera for its show “MTV Live.”For the next four weeks, the show will feature OSU students live from Drackett Tower as they ask celebrity guests questions.Kim Jones, a senior majoring in criminology, had her moment on national television when she talked with MTV vee-jays and singer Sarah McLachlan.”I love her, she is so cool and laid back,” said Jones. “I can’t believe I was on MTV!”She asked McLachlan what motivated her to change her look for her new album. Jones spent her time in class yesterday talking with her best friend.”It was my question, I told her ask that,” said Amy Cramer, a junior majoring in nursing. “I screamed when I found out that Sarah McLachlan was the guest because I have been a huge fan.”Jones, who is from Barbados, said she wouldn’t have the chance to do something like this in her home country because it does not have the technology. She said she was calm but excited to be on television despite the few frustrating moments before going live when communication with the people in New York was difficult.OSU was chosen because MTV field producer Rick Hendrickson was familiar with Columbus and thought the university would have the ability to set up the computer interaction.”OSU is in the forefront in its use of technology,” Hendrickson said. “I knew it would work there.”Once he had chosen OSU, Hendrickson called up its web site and from there chose Drackett.”I saw that it had a lot of upperclassmen and it interested me because of that,” he said. Shelley Beal, a senior majoring in sociology, and Max Langenkamp, a senior majoring in English, were also scheduled to be on the show, but MTV decided to broadcast only one person at a time. That didn’t stop Beal from jumping up in front of the camera during the broadcast though. She said she wanted to take her chance to be on MTV.Beal and Langenkamp will be live on the show today or later in the month. More students will be picked for the show Tuesday through a drawing at Drackett’s biweekly forum, Tower Talk. The forum is open to all students.
