The Ohio State women’s swim team is showing a fine stroke, getting off to a fast start this season with a 3-1 record in the Big Ten.’It’s a very solid team,’ said OSU senior Jocelyn Jay, the 1994-95 Big Ten swimmer of the year. ‘Definitely we’re way ahead of where we were last year at this time. We’re building momentum as we get in the Big Ten, so I think it’s going to be one heck of a show when we get there.’After redshirting last season to train for the Canadian Olympic trials, Jay has returned this season to add a much needed boost to the team. During the 1994-95 season, Jay won the 500-meter freestyle, 400-meter individual medley, and the 1650-meter freestyle at the Big Ten Championships. ‘She is the only All-American we have on the squad,’ said OSU coach Jim Montrella. ‘She’s the only Big Ten champion we have on the team, and she has been a Big Ten champion in three events.’ This season the swim team is almost twice the size of last season’s team, with 10 new freshman swimmers, and 13 returning letter winners.’We have a really great freshman class this year, and with the return of Jocelyn and the other swimmers that came back we’re doing really well,’ said OSU sophomore Julie Hutzler, team record holder in the 100-meter backstroke. ‘We really got a lot closer during Christmas training and that helped out a lot. There’s a lot of team support and a lot of camaraderie among the girls.’In dual meets this season the team has a record of 5-3. ‘I think that we’ve done really well,’ said OSU junior Missy Kuck, team record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke (in the 50-meter pool, the short course). ‘In our dual meet season we actually have a winning record right now, so we’re pretty excited about that.’The team only has two dual meets left, on Feb. 7 against Pittsburgh and Feb. 8 against Purdue.’We think we got a real shot at winning our last two dual meets,’ Montrella said. ‘In addition, we think we have a real shot on Feb. 7 and 8 breaking as many as 10 pool records. That would be pretty exciting, and very indicative of the future that we have.’ The Big Ten championship takes place in Ann Arbor Feb. 20 and 22.’We can definitely place in the top five of the Big Ten,’ Jay said. ‘It’s not going to be easy, but nothing is. If everyone in the Big Ten does the best that they can I think we can knock Michigan out of that top spot. I think we’re one of the teams that can help do that.’
