Nathaniel Hale, better known to hip-hop fans as Nate Dogg has been a stable vocal singer in many songs produced by the West Coast record label Death Row.Nate Dogg has been featured on songs by Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr. Dre, Tupac, Warren G and Tha Dogg Pound. Nate Dogg could always be counted on to lay down his smooth soulful voice to any rap song when singing was called for on the track. Now Nate Dogg has broke away from the troubled Death Row camp and started his own label, Dogg Foundation Records. As founder of Dogg Foundation, Nate`s first project was to release his first solo album titled, Nate Dogg “G-Funk Classics” Vol. 1&2.For all the hip-hop heads out there that like the west coast G-Funk style of rap and R&B this CD is for you. The one thing that you have to remember is that Nate Dogg is not a rapper, he is a R&B singer. Some people might have a hard time categorizing Nate`s music, but out of the 27 songs on the two CDs, there are 16 songs featuring other artists. Most of the artist are from the rap world including his homies from the 213 click, Snoop Doggy Dog and Warren G. Also on the album are Kurupt, Tupac, Daz and Big Syke just to name a few. Most of the lyrics in the songs Nate sings on the CD are like rap songs. The subject matter is similar to what you would hear in most rap songs. Nate seems at times to be singing a rap, which doesn`t always work well. One thing that he does well is capture that whole west coast feel with some tight beats. If you get into the music you will feel like you are on I-405 rolling through Long Beach. However, his lyrics leave a little bit to be desired. One nice surprise was to hear Tupac on the song “Me & My Homies”. This was one of the better songs on the CD and that is not just because Tupac laced the track with his lyrics. The song has a good beat and it held my attention long enough to get through the whole song. Not to mention it is hard to mess up a song with Tupac in it.The song “These Days” which features Daz was also one of the songs that I think people will like. The beat is nice and this is one song that you might find yourself singing long after you turn the CD player off. “Nobody Does It Better” is a song that Nate does with Warren G. It sounds a lot like “Regulate” the 1994 hit song from the “Above The Rim” soundtrack that put these two artists on the map. I like this song, but just like “Regulate”, “Nobody Does It Better” samples an already famous hit song, “Let`s Get Closer” by Atlantic Starr. Thanks to Daz, Snoop, Kurupt and a little help from Warren G, Nate Dogg`s solo project is not that bad. There are a handful of songs that might get a little bit of play in some jeeps and home stereos, but with so many songs on this CD featuring other artists, I think the CD should be called “Nate Dogg and Friends” Vol. 1&2.
