It’s the return of the great American high school football movie. And it’s a triumphant return at that.”Varsity Blues,” the new release from Paramount Pictures, follows the lives of five high school seniors on the football team in their small Texas town. And, not unlike many towns in America, they’re obsessed with high school football. The movie stars James Van Der Beek (“Dawson’s Creek”) as second-string quarterback Jonathan Moxon. Moxon reluctantly is made into the starter after the town’s star quarterback, Lance Harbor, played by Paul Walker (“Pleasantville”), is injured.Moxon takes over the position but not without facing opposition from tyrannical head coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), who has no faith that Moxon can handle the task of leading the team to its 23rd division title.Director Brian Robbins (“Good Burger”) has made not only a good football movie, but a good high school/coming-of-age movie. It’s akin to the type of movie that John Hughes made popular in the 1980s such as “The Breakfast Club.”It exposes the pressures placed on a high school athlete, not only by the athletes themselves, but by coaches, parents and even an entire town. The movie also takes a good look at how small-town high school football turns into more than just a game for some people: Parents live vicariously through their children and try desperately to recapture their glory days. Or in some cases, they try to compensate for glory days that never existed.Robbins has also produced a solid comedy. Now, granted it might only appeal to people between the ages of 18 to 30, but it nonetheless has some truly funny scenes. It also contains just enough nudity to make this a real “boys will be boys” movie. One of the nicest parts about this movie is that whether you played high school sports or hated everyone involved with them, you can still leave the theater satisfied.”Varsity Blues” is an enjoyable, non-taxing comedy that should make a great date movie. It probably doesn’t have to worry about winning any critical awards, but at the very least it should receive some recognition for best use of whipped cream.
