Theatrics, a good rock feel and four years experience have made Red Wanting Blue a staple rock band in central Ohio. Beginning at Ohio University in Athens and now Columbus-based, the band started by playing parties, then eventually moved up to playing bars. But after years of playing in people’s kitchens and back porches, Red Wanting Blue is now up to co-headlining at the Newport local act …of a Revolution.”It’s pretty amazing to see two local bands practically sellout the Newport. You grow up and you go see big bands and small young bands at places like that and it is like magic, frightening almost,” said lead singer Scott Terry.Terry’s vocals are similar to Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas, but the band’s sound is more rock ‘n’ roll. They perform some hard rock, some lite rock and occasionally an old Beastie Boys cover, to make the show appealing to people with musical interest from every genre. Besides performing the music Red Wanting Blue also does some theatrics.”I was an acting major in college and that will just always be in me and a part of what I do, I feel any kind of theatrics based in sincere motives are good,” Terry said. The band name comes from a poem Terry wrote while in college and is a metaphor for the old saying; the grass is always greener on the other side. Essentially saying no matter what you have, you always want more of something else. The band name is also a constitution to the band to do what they want, which you can hear in their music and its wide range of styles. But they do try to keep their music positive, but still have a meaning.Red Wanting Blue has had the spotlight before, they have opened up for such bands as Fuel, Cracker and 10,000 Maniacs. They have even played before thousands of people at Polaris Amphitheater when they were one of the opening bands for Kid Rock. They will be co-headlining with …of a Revolution again Friday, Dec. 3 at Newport Music Hall.
