Picture it: Rome 218 B.C., the empire is at it peak, democracy is being created and gladiators are the Michael Jordans and Sylvester Stallones of the time. This is the setting for “Gladiator,” the first big blockbuster film of the summer set to be released Friday. With the overwhelming sets and amazing acting, one word can describe this Roman-epic picture: phenomenal.The film follows the life of a Roman general, Maximus, who is played by Russell Crowe, best known for his roles in “The Insider” and “L.A. Confidential.” The opening of the film follows Maximus in a bloody battle in Germania, a section of land the Romans need to complete their empire. While in Germania, the dying Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, a second father to Maximus, asks him to succeed him in power after he dies. This announcement comes to the discontent of Aurelius’ true heir to the throne, the ambitious and dangerous Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Enraged with jealousy, Commodus orders Maximus’ execution and the death of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is pulled into a life of slavery where he is forced to become a gladiator. Maximus’ success as a gladiator leads him to Rome and to battles in the famous Colosseum. He also comes face to face with his enemy Commodus. The remainder and most intriguing parts of the film follow the obstacles Maximus’ faces while trying to avenge the death of his family.The film, which cost more than $100 million to make, keeps audiences in awe with the amazing set design and costumes. The director, Ridley Scott, who is best known for “Alien” and “Silence of the Lambs,” rounded up some of the most talented people in Hollywood to create this picture. Set designers created realistic models of ancient Rome, including the Colosseum, where many of Maximus’ battles took place. With the help of thousands of extras, Scott makes the audience feel as if they are actually witnessing the battles Maximus endures to seek his revenge. Crowe proves, through his realistic portrayal of a diligent gladiator, that he has earned the honor of being considered one of the best actors of this time. Phoenix is also sure to gain much recognition for his portrayal of the dark Commodus. Both actors displayed pinnacle performances in a genre of film that has not been made in decades.”Gladiator” is sure to be a hit with all types of audiences. With an exciting storyline and realistic battle scenes, viewers will be kept on the edge of their seats. People with weak stomachs might want to steer clear of this one, but must also keep in mind that in order to have the movie believable, blood and head-chopping had to be incorporated.
