For all those ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys fans out there, MTV has created a new heartthrob sensation to drool over: 2gether. That’s right, there are five more hot, young guys who sing endless love songs and romantic ballads. Well, not exactly.Actually, this band is just one big joke and serves only as a mockery of other “legitimate” boy bands. Jerry, Q.T., Mickey, Chad, and Doug sing songs with titles such as “The Hardest Part About Breaking Up Is Getting Back Your Stuff” and “U & U & Me.” Their second album titled “Again” is loaded with more songs of the same sick humor. While they’re very amusing, the songs do provide a small amount of musical talent. But musical talent is not really what’s important. Their point is to make light of the other all-too-cheesy New Kids On The Block wannabes that take themselves all too seriously. But for all those die-hard boy band fans out there who need to know what they sound like, 2gether exemplifies the whine of the Backstreet Boys, yet lacks the sophistication of ‘N Sync. However, in whatever areas the band lacks, they make up for it with humor and pure brainless entertainment. A group of actors who would dedicate their careers to being a part of the largest spoof of the music industry must really think it’s funny to be able to take such a risk. Well, it is funny. To truly understand the charisma of this group, at least watch an episode of their new series on MTV.In the show, each band member’s personality is portrayed the way no album ever could. Each member is given a distinct identity: Jerry the cute one, Chad the dumb one, Q.T. the young one, Mickey the poser and Doug the lovable one. These stereotypical personalities flow over into the band’s music as they sing inappropriate lyrics to typical – or stereotypical? – boy band music. Complete with upbeat dance tunes and heartwarming – or heartbreaking – ballads, this album does a great job of imitating the real-life boy band phenomenon. The titles of the songs sound almost realistic, but after listening to the lyrics carefully, one realizes once again how easy it would be to change the meaning of the latest Backstreet Boys or ‘N Sync song. If one has the patience to listen to the entire album, they’ll find it to be amusing. In fact, it becomes funnier the more times it is played because of the hidden humor that is picked up.By singing songs about accidentally dating a girlfriend’s younger sister and hitting people where it counts with a bit of sincerity, 2gether is sure to be a hit with those with dry senses of humor. As silly as it may be, it seems that the band will be around for awhile.2gether’s music might not be inspiring or even very original, however, their lyrics are well thought out. Their new album might not be Grammy material, but it might be worth buying simply for the chuckle factor.
