The Ohio State School of Music presented a Faculty Artist Series Concert Monday night featuring the music of early 20th century Vienna.
Weigel Auditorium was filled with delightfully tantalizing sounds as the concert included Arnold Schoenberg’s “Klavierstuck op. 33a” and “Kammersymphonie op. 9.” Also on the concert bill were Alban Berg’s “Kleiner Waltzer, Klavierstuck, Piano Sonata, op. 1,” Gustav Mahler’s “Scherzo from Symphony no. 7,” Alma Schindler-Mahler’s “Lieder” and Johann Strauss’ “Rosen aus dem Suden.”
Featured faculty artists from the School of Music displayed their various talents both instrumentally and vocally. Pianists included Arved Ashby, Caroline Hong, Kenneth Williams and Dianne Frazer-Cross. Making a special guest performance was Phyllis Rappeport, also on piano.
Other instrumentalists included William Conable on cello, Laurel Butler and Melissa Ryan on violins, Katherine Borst-Jones on flute and Jane Ellsworth on clarinet.
The concert kicked off with seven featured instrumentalists playing “Rosen aus dem Suden,” an easygoing waltz that effectively set the mood for a night of music that was kind to the ears.
Mezzo-soprano vocalist Eileen Davis performed five songs from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn,” spurring an inappropriate and eager round of applause from members of the audience after her rendition of “Lob des hohen Verstands (In praise of the sublime mind).” Piano notes keyed in synchronized fashion with the vocalist’s words, giving the songs an emotional feel of both pain and pleasure.
Conducted by Marshall Haddock, the performance emulated passion for sounds that bellowed from both amazing instrumentation and vocals. Emotion could be felt not only in each performers sound but also in facial expressions and vivid body language. Appreciation for the artists’ pure talent was found in an overall, complete performance.
The Faculty Artist Series Concert was the second show this quarter as part of the OSU School of Music Performance Series. The agenda includes “Music on the Edge,” 8 p.m. May 9 at Weigel Auditorium, with violinist Charles Wetherbee, pianist Caroline Hong and cellist William Conable. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for OSU faculty, staff and Alumni Association members and $8 for senior citizens and students.
