With winter in full swing, It is difficult to find any activities for the college students who are unlikely to pick up a snowboard, click on some ski boots or hop on a sled this season.

Luckily, many industries are aware of this. They have found ways for people to entertain themselves – in many cases, without even leaving their rooms.

One of the biggest industries to recognize this trend is the Hollywood movie industry. Each winter some of the most highly anticipated movies of the year are released into theaters or onto DVDs.

One new movie that was released in theaters is “The Butterfly Effect,” starring Ashton Kutcher. The dark role Kuthcher plays in the film contrasts his bubbly Michael Kelso character on “that 70s show.”

“Even though it seems ridiculous to see Ashton Kutcher be anything but dumb on ‘Punked,’ it actually is very well done. I met the directors and the whole cast at the Sundance Film Festival last week,” said Nate Hahn, senior pursuing a personalized major in film and video production and direction. “The shooting style actually is very complex and took 22 weeks to complete.”

On the lighter side of things, the comedy “Along Came Polly,” starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston, also was released into theaters. Judging by the previous success of both actors, “Along Came Polly” promises to achieve the same success.

“I really liked the two of them together in this movie. There were some really funny parts throughout the entire thing,” said Jen Nicastro, senior in exercise science. “It’s not a girl or a guy movie, so it’s good for a date of just to go see with friends.”

If the thought of leaving that beloved recliner for two hours is too much to bear, renting a movie can be an option.

“You can always dip into classics like ‘Dazed and Confused,’ which is a perfect flick to pop in after coming home from the bars. And the best part is you can just watch bits and pieces of it,” Hahn said.

“Since Johnny Depp is up for all sorts of awards this year, I think some people should check out who he was before,” Hahn said. Check out his old school classics like his work in the incredibly shot and directed film, ‘Blow;’ his big brother role in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape;’ or his debut in ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ which paired him up with big-time director Tim Burton.”

With Valentines Day fast approaching, some couples may find cozying up on the love seat with a DVD from their home collection is the best route for romance.

“‘Sweet November’ and ‘Pretty Woman’ are two good date movies,” said Kelly Morris, senior in family financial management. “But, if that’s too much romance for a guy, then a movie like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ is good too.”

No matter if it’s a trip to the theater or local movie store that satisfies the wintertime blues, it is clear that for those few hours the weather outside ill surely be forgotten.
