Many Ohio State students would surely agree that sliding to class for eight blocks to campus isn’t their idea of fun. The icy weather, mixed with the freezing temperatures are most likely the reason a lot of OSU students tend to kick back and relax at their own homes during the winter months.
Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few ways to have an exciting night at home with friends, even if they don’t involve kings, quarters or flip-cup tournaments.
While hibernating, college students should have a few good ideas for quick, easy and fun meals to cook for a party of two, three or thirty.
One fun meal idea is to a host a Mexican fiesta, margaritas included.
“A main dish can be tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, just use whatever type of meat you have. For chicken or beef strips, slice and marinate in any type of fajita (or) Mexican type seasoning and cook with onions and peppers,” said Erin Horton, graduate research associate in food science and technology. “Next, find some kind of tortilla product. You’ll also want toppings like refried beans, shredded cheese, salsa, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and maybe so jalapeos, if you like it spicy.”
Since lack of funds is often an issue for college students, finding cheap ways to make delicious snacks is a benefit.
“I found the best way to make my own pasta salad with Ramen noodles,” said Jocelyn Stewart, senior in human development and family science. “I just cook the noodles, strain them and then add Italian dressing, green peppers, tomatoes and any other vegetables I have. Then I put it in the fridge for a few hours until it gets cold.”
If cooking a meal is too time consuming, there are plenty of other quick snack ideas.
“One of the easiest dips most people like uses Velveeta cheese and salsa. Just add a little cheese and salsa to a bowl, microwave and enjoy,” Horton said. “Or easy garlic bread – just butter and add garlic powder to any bread. Toast and enjoy,”
Next time the cash is short, those stilettos won’t make it through the snow or that lazy streak kicks into full gear, think about taking a few minutes to invite friends over. Cook them up a little something, even if it’s just to warm them up before the big beer pong tournament.
