The Ohio State Undergraduate Student Government will be filling four vacant seats when midterm elections take place at 6:30 this evening in the basement of the Ohio Union.

The vacant seats are for representatives of the commuter, diversity and West Campus constituencies.

The commuter seat was formerly occupied by Joe Newhart, who has resigned. Out of the two West Campus positions that were vacated, one senator, Kia Grant, was relieved of her post when she relocated out of that constituency, said Speaker of the Senate Matt Monta.

The two other seats are unoccupied due to attendance issues. They include the other West Campus seat held by Mark Wongrowski, and the diversity seat held by Delicia Thomas, said Nick Benson, USG Senator, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

“Hopefully, we never have to fill positions during the year, but situations do arise where we have to,” Monta said.

Mid-term elections were also held during autumn quarter to fill vacated seats.

Candidates will be interviewed by the Senate and voted upon until a majority decision is reached for each opening.

“We want to ensure a fair and public process to fill our senate vacancies,” said Nick Benson, USG Senator, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “Parliamentary procedures will be followed.”

A notification was posted on Buckeye Net News announcing the openings and requesting candidate applications. Approximately 60 applications have been received by the USG, Benson said.

“It’s exciting to see such an outpouring of interest in the USG,” said Monta. “We have a lot of intelligent people that can accomplish positive results.”

Annual elections are held in April, and a senator’s term lasts for one year that begins in May. The officials elected midterm will hold their position until May of this year, when that seat comes up for re-election.

The West Campus senators represent students living in Morrill and Lincoln Towers. The commuter senator represents students living outside of the university district, while the diversity senator is an at-large seat that represents all students.
