In order to receive a Master of Business Administration degree from Yale University, students must study abroad, according to an article from the Associated Press. The move was designed to improve Yale’s 19th-ranked MBA program to the status of schools such as Harvard and Wharton.

According to the AP article, universities are trying to separate themselves in the MBA field – something that in recent years is becoming decidedly unpopular to business professionals.

The Lantern believes the move made by Yale is a step in the right direction. In today’s global marketplace, business professionals must be aware of worldly issues. Also, graduates coming out of the program will be better suited to succeed in today’s diverse marketplace.

The program places students in one of eight locations during the first two weeks of January. According to the article, the students will meet with business, government and nonprofit leaders.

In addition to preparing the students to think globally, the program also hopes to show the MBA students the company’s working environment. Too often emphasis is placed on making a profit rather than creating an overall common good for a company. By learning of working conditions, MBA graduates will be able to make wise decisions that do not short the working environments for lower-level employees.

A diverse degree is essential in today’s world. Hopefully, the move made by Yale university will spur other schools to consider diversifying their programs.
