To anyone walking in the off-campus area, be mindful of your surroundings.
University Police issued a crime alert for the entire off-campus area. According to the alert, six robberies were reported in the off-campus area from March 23 through March 28.
Three of the victims had their purses “forcefully grabbed from their arms,” according to the alert.
It described the other three incidents involving victims being assaulted and property being stolen.
In two of the incidents, a weapon was either seen or implied. An unidentified male is the suspect in all of the incidents.
“I think it helps to raise awareness and help students know these things are real and really happening to people,” said Julie Baker, the community ambassador for West Oakland Avenue.
Although not in their technical jurisdiction, University Police issued the crime alert for the area.
“It’s well within the area we define as the university police,” said Rick Amweg, assistant chief of police. “As more and more people get out moving about with the warm weather, it’s extremely important that people remain aware of their surroundings.”
Anyone who has information on any of these incidents should call either the Columbus Division of Police at 645-4545, or University Police at 292-2121. An escort service is also available to anyone who feels unsafe walking alone by calling 292-3322.
