OSU army ROTC instructor wins national award

Retired 1st Sgt. Daniel Whitney from the Ohio State Military Science Department was awarded the Department of the Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal recently and was selected as the 2007 Enlisted Instructor of the Year. ROTC instructors from 274 colleges and universities nationwide competed for the award. Whitney teaches military science to junior and senior army ROTC cadets at OSU. The OSU Ranger Challenge Team has won back – to – back championships in regional competition under his direction.

OSU trustees to meet Sept. 21

The Ohio State Board of Trustees and its committees will meet Friday at the Fawcett Center. The schedule includes: meetings of the Investments Committee at 8 a.m., and the Fiscal and the Academic and Student Affairs committees at 9 a.m. The formal board meeting will begin at 10:15 a.m. in the Clinton Room. Following a lunch with the Alumni Association Board of Directors at 11:45 a.m.,there will be a meeting of the Audit Committee from 1:30-3 p.m.

Metro school students take first OSU courses at Stone Lab

More than 30 Metro High School students started their Ohio State careers recently at Stone Laboratory, OSU’s island campus on Lake Erie.Taking either insect biology or aquatic biology for OSU credit, the second-year students spent the week of Monday, Sept. 10 at Stone Lab. A public school emphasizing math, science and technology, Metro is a unique partnership among OSU, Battelle Memorial Institute and 16 Central Ohio public school districts.

OSU clinical research professionals meeting Sept. 20

Jennifer Yucel, administrative scientific manager of Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Office for Contract Development and Coordination, will discuss “Clinical Trial Budgeting” from noon – 1 p.m. Thursday in Meiling Hall 234. Members sought for new OSU community orchestra

Faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to join the new Ohio State Community Orchestra, directed by William Boggs. All orchestral instruments are welcome and no audition is required. The orchestra will rehearse every Monday from 7-8:18 p.m. in Weigel Hall 177. The course number is MUS 694P (call # 21692-4); it meets all year and earns one credit hour per quarter for those enrolled in classes. This artistic adventure concludes with a spring concert. Latest issue of health newsletter available

The latest issue of Your Plan for Health newsletter, “Tools for Healthy Living,” is being mailed to the homes of benefit-eligible faculty and staff. The issue features information on 2008 medical plan options and provides the dates, times and locations of Open Enrollment Forums. Free Qigong relaxation classes offered

Counseling and Consultation Services is offering free Qigong (chee-gong) sessions every Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Library and Media Resource Suite, Younkin Success Center on the second floor. Qigong can be a method of relaxation and stress management through gentle movement. Sessions are free and open to all Ohio State community members.
