Nearly 200 students, visiting scholars, staff and faculty members participated in the 2008 annual International Photography Competition. The competition, organized by the Office of International Affairs, encouraged members of the Ohio State community to submit a photo taken outside of the U.S. to be considered for the competition.

Contestants entered photos from 42 countries this year. Most of the photographs submitted to the contest were taken in Italy, followed by India and China.

Thirty-one photos will be selected for the judging process and will be on display in Bricker Hall Monday, Nov. 17 through December. The submissions are divided into three categories: people, places and transportation. Ten photographs from each category plus one best-in-show photograph will be featured in the exhibit.

Winners will be announced on the evening of Monday, Nov. 17 during the opening reception for International Education Week. There will be a first-, second- and third-place winner in each category.

Victor Van Buchem, public relations coordinator for the Office of International Affairs, said the photos are a diverse representation of the places and moments the contestants have encountered.

He said he hopes the exhibit sparks students’ interest in traveling abroad.

“The photos show the many different ways [students] can become involved in international learning – whether it be studying abroad, interning in a different country or traveling,” Van Buchem said. “We want the exhibit to represent the opportunities available to students.”

The competition also benefits the Office of International Affairs’ international education outreach program. All photos submitted are compiled as a traveling photo exhibit for local K-12 educators to teach students about countries and cultures, Van Buchem said.

In the past two years, the photo exhibit has traveled to 29 schools in Ohio as well as 12 other states. More than 15,200 parents, teachers and students have viewed the photos and their descriptions, according to the Office of International Affairs Web site.
