Fall quarter is not over yet, and the fashion runway adorned with colorful leaves at “Sartoria the Show pt. III” reminded the audience just that.
Ohio State senior Ryan Kemp directed and produced the fashion show at the Columbus Convention Center, which was his third annual fall fashion show. The show featured Columbus designers and boutiques.
“I didn’t expect it to grow like this,” said Kemp, an architecture major. Although he enjoys organizing the shows, he admits it has become “a very strenuous and stressful process.”
To relieve some of the pressure, Kemp received support from several people and organizations.
Dominique Williams, a sophomore in social work, helped with wardrobes and lining up the models backstage.
“I just love fashion … what girl doesn’t?” Williams said.
Some of the shows’ designers included Samara Collins, Sole Classic, Akira Takashi and 21 Questions. Many of the designers are Columbus residents hoping to make it big in the fashion industry. Designer and Columbus-native Michael Shundelmier owns the clothing line Michael Shundo, which features all hand-made clothes.
“I started off painting on jeans,” Shundelmier said.
Shundelmier’s line, and many others at Sartoria, have been featured on runways, in magazines and in several shows around the country including Columbus Design Magazine, “106 & Park” and the Indiana Black Expo.
During the show, models walked the runway to music from a live DJ, drummer and keyboard player.
“[The models] were pretty professional,” said Gerald Morton, sophomore in biology.
Some of the models, such as Aushayu Spann, sophomore in textiles and clothing, are students who enjoy modeling in their spare time.
“It’s just been something I’ve always wanted to do since I was younger, so I finally decided to pursue it when I got the chance,” Spann said.
Other models who walked the runway plan to model professionally in the future.
“I have been doing this for about two years now and my status is going up,” said Columbus-native Chad Palmer. “I plan on making it big.”
Although the show received positive feedback, Kemp has his doubts about conducting other fashion shows in the future.
“This might be the last one,” Kemp stated. “I feel like everyone is doing fashion shows, so I want to do something different”.
