Ohio State faculty, staff, students and visitors will now have 800 additional parking spaces available to call their own. The new Ohio Union Garage South opened Monday, a month earlier than projected.

“We were trying to get it open early – before the Michigan game,” said Ruth Miller, the senior project manager for Facilities, Design and Construction.

The Ohio Union Garage was originally one garage that was recently split into two different locations, 38 feet apart from each other, Miller said. The north half of the garage was renovated, while the south half was demolished in September 2007.

“The intent was to provide parking for the Ohio Union, Wexner and Mershon Centers,” Miller said.

The 14-month garage construction project cost $15.5 million dollars to complete, including both the renovation of the northern garage and the construction of the southern garage. The amount spent was $2 million dollars less than the budgeted cost.

“We didn’t have cost overruns during construction,” Miller said. “We didn’t run into any big problems and stayed ahead of schedule.”

Miller said the leftover money will be returned to Transportation and Parking, most likely to be used on another project.
