Nearly all university residence halls will close on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. for winter break and will reopen on Jan. 4 at 8 a.m.
Students who choose to remain on campus or are unable to travel home for winter break can relocate to one of the eight residence halls that will remain open.
Although students are responsible for making alternate arrangements, Scott R. Boden, associate director of Housing Education, is confident that the university is meeting the students’ needs.
“University Housing staff is always willing to offer assistance and alternatives for our students that live with us,” Boden said in an e-mail.
If housing demand exceeds available space, Boden says University Housing staff will still work with a student to provide housing.
This includes temporary stay in residence hall lounges or extended stay in a student’s original room. Boden said he believes the process has been successful in the past and will continue to work in the future because students are informed of the mandatory move-out when they sign housing contracts.
Many students on campus agree.
“I already have a flight scheduled for break,” said Daniel Weintraub, a freshman in Business from Long Island, N.Y.
“I think most people are ready to go home by then. All the out-of-state people I know already have flights home, too.”
Robbie Brickner, a freshman in exploratory and office assistant at Smith Hall, said he has not heard complaints from residents. He believes students usually don’t have a hard time making arrangements.
Students who use their Buck ID to enter a closed residence hall will be charged a fee. A list of tips for move-out can be found at University Housing’s Web site, www.housing.osu.edu.
Boden suggests students who have not made alternate living arrangements contact their resident adviser or hall director immediately.
