Ohio State should expect certain things from its new head football coach, regardless of who gets the job.Foremost, he must display leadership. Not just the ability to get everyone going in the same direction, anyone with a broom and a good stiff hand can do that. He must have the ability to inspire people. Great coaches have the ability to get people fired up. The people may love them, some may hate them, but they will always spark some kind of interest. In a much over used word: Charisma. For the last few years the only interest the football Buckeyes have generated is speculation on if the offense would ever learn more than four plays.Similarly the coach must earn the respect of players and fans. How much respect can there be on a team where a lawsuit for assault is filed between two players? The type of situation described by anonymous players, where insults and trash-talk are allowed to boil over into an assault, should never had occurred. The head coach, or his staff, should have seen the situation developing and stopped it. Also the respect that players have for their coach also transfers to each other. No respect for the coach means no respect for teammates. A head coach should never fail to have his players respect. The respect of the fans, especially Ohio State fans, is notoriously difficult to have or hold. Perhaps the days of when OSU was known as “the graveyard of coaches” are back. But, maybe we are ready for another Woody Hayes. Ohio State football needs someone who can earn respect from being a coach, not someone who has the image of a corporate CEO or spokesman.Discipline also comes with respect. The Buckeyes displayed very little discipline in their recent bowl loss. Having a star senior benched for poor academic performance before his last bowl game sign of poor discipline. Former OSU players under Woody Hayes speak with fear of how hard he would discipline them for poor grades. Harder than he would discipline them for mistakes on the playing field. Ohio State needs this type coach to stem the tide of prima donnas on the team. A coach who will tell his players that there is a life beyond the end of their sports careers, and that they had better prepare for it now. Finally, the new head coach must have a heart of scarlet and gray. Coach Cooper may have had this trait, but it never surfaced in public. The fans must believe that the new coach will bleed scarlet and gray. He will be taking charge during a low ebb of Buckeye spirit and must re-ignite the flame of Buckeye fans.In short, Ohio State must expect a great coach. A coach to lead its team back to greatness.
