The Marion campus of Ohio State announced Gregory S. Rose permanent dean and director effective May 8, 2004.
Rose served as interim dean and director for the Marion campus since July 1. He took over for Dominic Dottavio, whose term ended June 2003. Rose is originally from Chicago and began teaching at the Marion campus in 1982.
Prior to that he obtained his undergraduate degree from Valparaiso University, earning a double major in geography and history. After that he received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in geography.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the Marion campus as dean and director,” Rose said in a statement.
He was selected for his knowledge and experience of the university and for his strong administrative skills. Many OSU faculty members are excited Rose was named for the position on a permanent basis .
“(Rose is) a wonderful administrator,” said Karen Bell, OSU dean of the College of Arts. “He has extensive knowledge of the university and strong people skills.”
People at the Marion campus have made plenty of positive comments about Rose.
“He is well thought of by the staff and students,” said Wayne Rowe, spokesman for the Marion campus.
Rose still teaches one course annually. He is also writing a book manuscript, which will be part of “The Discovery of People’s of Michigan” series.
“He has a lot of statistics and data about how people shift from different geographic areas,” Bell said.
Rose’s interests lie in the origins of various 19th century populations in the Midwest. Rose’s work throughout the years has involved him in many academic, personnel and administrative issues and plans.
In the past, Rose has been involved in projects on the Marion campus such as the building of residence halls and a student services building.
Rose was offered this position after an almost 11-month search. He resides in Delaware, Ohio, with his wife and two children.
